LaRoyce Hawkins to Lead the 96th Annual Bud Billiken® Parade in Chicago

LaRoyce Hawkins Named Grand Marshal of the Bud Billiken® Parade

The 96th Annual Bud Billiken® Parade is set to take place on August 9, 2025, on Chicago's South Side, marking yet another milestone in a celebration that reflects the pride and resilience of the community. This year, the popular star of Chicago P.D., LaRoyce Hawkins, will step into the role of Grand Marshal, promising an event filled with excitement and inspiration.

A Celebration of Community and Legacy

The Bud Billiken® Parade is not just any parade; it stands as the largest African American parade in the country. This year's theme, "Road to 100," draws attention to the approaching 100th anniversary of the event, which has been championing youth, education, and cultural pride since its inception in 1929. The parade serves as a vibrant back-to-school celebration, honoring the community's commitment to excellence and empowerment.

LaRoyce Hawkins, a native of Harvey, Illinois, has been influenced deeply by the parade's legacy. He shared poignant memories from his childhood, recalling how the parade was a distant dream come true.

“Imagine being a 9-year-old Black boy from Harvey, Illinois. The first time I heard the words 'Bud Billikin,' I remember being amused by the whimsical alliteration,” said Hawkins. Reflecting on the moment he was named Grand Marshal, he expressed immense gratitude, especially as he looks forward to experiencing this treasured event alongside his own son.

Honoring Heroes and Mentors

The Bud Billiken® Parade has always united generations, with a tradition of honoring individuals who exemplify community spirit and leadership. Myiti Sengstacke-Rice, President and CEO of the Chicago Defender Charities, emphasized Hawkins's role as a powerful example for the youth of the city:

“His passion, commitment to service, and love for Chicago make him the perfect choice to lead this year's parade.”

In addition to Hawkins, a variety of honorary Grand Marshals will join the festivities. These influential community figures span educators, business leaders, and youth mentors—all embodying the core values of legacy and leadership that the parade promotes.

A Day of Fun and Community Engagement

Kicking off at 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of 41st Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the parade will traverse south through Washington Park, concluding at Garfield Boulevard (55th Street) and Ellsworth Drive. In its wake, the Bud Billiken® Festival will offer a full day of activities aimed at bringing the community together. This festival, running from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., aims to provide entertainment, resources, and essential supplies to families.

Festival Highlights Include:

  • - Live performances and DJ entertainment
  • - Food trucks and local vendors
