Maker's Watch Knot Unveils the TAKUMI Collection
The renowned Japanese watch brand Maker's Watch Knot has just launched a remarkable series of mechanical models titled "Kanazawa Haku" under the TAKUMI Collection. This line features timepieces that beautifully incorporate the traditional Japanese craft of gold leafing, a technique that has been passed down in Kanazawa for over 400 years. The new models, AT-38SVPTBL and ATC-40SVPTBL, bring a sense of modern elegance to the realm of watchmaking.
Embracing Japanese Craftsmanship
Maker's Watch Knot is dedicated to delivering high-quality, MADE IN JAPAN timepieces and aims to promote the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship worldwide. Their vision has led them to pay tribute to the artisans who carry forth Japan’s traditional crafts, and the TAKUMI Collection is the embodiment of that respect. The collection includes the newly introduced "Kanazawa Haku" alongside previously launched models featuring lacquer and mother-of-pearl designs, merging the artistry of skilled artisans with contemporary watch aesthetics.
The Legacy of Kanazawa Haku
The art of Kanazawa Haku began in 1593 when Lord Maeda Toshiie ordered the production of gold and silver leaf. Over the centuries, this tradition has refined the technique, allowing artisans to create incredibly thin sheets of metal, even as thin as 1/1000 millimeter. This unmatched craftsmanship is now represented by Hakuichi, a company established in 1975 that has innovatively applied gold leaf across various sectors, from cosmetics to tableware. The Kanazawa Haku model embodies this innovative spirit, transforming a daily accessory into a work of art that enhances the Japanese aesthetic.
Unique Aesthetic Characteristics
The dial of the Kanazawa Haku model is a masterpiece born from traditional techniques and artisan creativity. The process begins with a meticulous technique known as "kirikawashi," where platinum leaf is finely crushed into flakes and evenly spread across the dial surface. Leveraging a unique dyeing method, the leaf is dyed a deep indigo color while retaining its natural sheen. Additionally, the dial is adorned with carefully placed flakes of platinum, artfully joined with a technique referred to as "chirashi," creating one-of-a-kind patterns that capture the interplay of light and shadow.
Miyagi Rimi, the craftsman behind this creation, has dedicated over two decades to exploring the potential of gold leaf. He identifies the greatest challenge as balancing randomness with precision in the limited size of a watch dial, leading to a technique that harmoniously combines spontaneous movements with careful placements. This results in a distinct expression of each piece, while still ensuring balance and uniformity across models.
Functionality Meets Design
The TAKUMI Collection comprises two models: the AT-38SVPTBL featuring a three-hand layout, and the ATC-40SVPTBL showcasing a chronograph option. Both are crafted not only with artistic beauty but also with the practicality expected of daily wear. A robust sapphire glass protects the dials, and both models offer impressive water resistance—5 ATM for the AT-38SVPTBL and 10 ATM for the ATC-40SVPTBL—making them resilient against the everyday elements of life.
