Adam Kohn Named Chair of Neuroscience

Adam Kohn, Ph.D., has officially taken on the role of chair in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience at the prestigious Albert Einstein College of Medicine. This appointment follows an exhaustive national search and comes after Dr. Kohn served as the interim chair for the past two years.

With a distinguished background in neuroscience, Dr. Kohn has dedicated much of his research focus to visual processing. His ability to lead has been acknowledged by his peers, particularly by Yaron Tomer, M.D., who is the Dean and chief academic officer at Montefiore Einstein. Commenting on Dr. Kohn's appointment, Dr. Tomer recognized Kohn's leadership skills, dedication, and collaborative spirit, which he said were instrumental in making him the ideal candidate for the role.

In his new position, Dr. Kohn will also continue to pursue his research endeavors. His laboratory is at the forefront of exploring how visual information is encoded and processed by groups of cortical neurons, as well as the impact of recent sensory experiences on these processes. The research conducted by his team looks into critical topics such as neural coding, cortical plasticity, and the neuronal underpinnings of visual perception. Dr. Kohn holds several prominent research grants from esteemed organizations, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Simons Foundation, showcasing his strong credentials and commitment to advancement in this field.

An enthusiastic mentor, Dr. Kohn has guided numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, with many of his students receiving accolades for their dissertation work, such as the Marmur prize. His trainees have successfully established their research programs at various institutions globally.

Upon his appointment, Dr. Kohn expressed great honor at leading such a revered department, noting its status as one of the pioneering neuroscience departments in the nation. He looks forward to collaborating with Dean Tomer and other department members to further enhance the department’s research and mentorship reputation.

Dr. Kohn's journey at Einstein began in 2006 after completing a postdoctoral fellowship under the guidance of Dr. J. Anthony Movshon at New York University. His career has been impressive, highlighted by his completion of doctoral studies in neurobiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, after which he worked as an associate with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He holds a physics bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley.
