American Lung Association Launches Initiative to Enhance Indoor Air Quality in Schools

The American Lung Association (ALA) has taken significant steps to improve indoor air quality in K-12 educational institutions through its Clean Air School Challenge program. Every day, millions of students and staff are affected by poor air quality in schools, which poses a serious public health risk. These contaminants can be aggravated by structural problems like leaks and the use of certain cleaning products. Studies indicate that poor air quality can severely impair student focus and attention, trigger health issues, and lead to increased absenteeism. In classrooms where air quality is subpar, the academic achievement of students, especially those with existing health conditions, can be disproportionately affected.

Moreover, staff members are not exempt from the detrimental effects of poor indoor air. Teachers and school personnel may experience reduced productivity and higher rates of absenteeism due to health problems associated with bad air quality.
