A New Era of Anime: 'Another World'
Set for theatrical release in the United States on June 5, 2026, the animated film
'Another World' marks a significant milestone for collaboration in global cinema. Produced by
Digital Hollywood University Graduate School (DHGS), known for its cultivation of leaders in digital communication, this film is rooted in the award-winning novel
'Thousand-Year Demon' by writer
Naka Saijo. The project was led by
Takeshi Yoshimura, a professor at DHGS, aiming to integrate significant Japanese intellectual properties into international markets.
This ambitious film aims to attract a new audience by exploring deep themes of memory and the soul, set in the fantastical realm known as
'Setsugai'. The production has taken shape through an international collaboration with
Point Five Creations in Hong Kong, under the direction of
Tommy Kai Chung NG. Scheduled for completion in the spring of 2025,
'Another World' will make its world premiere during the prestigious
Annecy International Animation Film Festival in the same year.
The Story Behind 'Another World'
Transitioning between life and reincarnation, souls journey through a mystical world known as
Setsugai. At the center is Gudou, a spiritual guide for these souls. As he leads a girl named Yuri, he learns about human emotions which are complex and often beyond his understanding. According to the queen of the heavenly beings, Mira, Gudou must suppress Yuri’s anger to prevent her transformation into a dangerous monster, launching him on a perilous mission alongside a reflective narrative that questions the essence of humanity.
Completing its festival journey,
'Another World' will first premiere in
Hong Kong, achieving remarkable box office success that places it at the top of the earnings chart in its opening week. Following these accomplishments, the film received multiple nominations including
Best Animation Feature at the Golden Horse Awards and was nominated for eight categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, at the
Hong Kong Film Awards.
A Cultural Initiative
The
Japan IP Global Challenge Program, launched by DHGS in 2016, aims to uncover high-potential Japanese content and transform it for international audiences. The
'Thousand-Year Demon' adaptation received endorsement from
Tokuma Shoten, a leading Japanese publishing house, and was facilitated by
Emi Iizuka, a producer familiar with international film markets. Through rigorous processes, including summaries and translations by students from various countries studying at DHGS, this project showcases the university’s commitment to global cultural exchange.
