Acela Truck Company Launches the Dispatcher™ 4x4 Type 6 Fire Engine
Acela Truck Company is setting a new standard in the wildland fire market with its latest innovation: the Dispatcher™ 4x4 Type 6 Fire Engine. Engineered specifically for challenging terrains where quick response is crucial, this versatile vehicle features a 150-gallon water tank along with a full array of firefighting tools and equipment. This compact unit is designed to navigate tight spaces and perform efficiently in both on-road and off-road scenarios—it is a crucial asset for today’s wildfire response teams.
Design and Specifications
The Dispatcher™ is built on a modified Jeep® Gladiator® chassis, offering unprecedented maneuverability in rugged landscapes. Its extended cab and custom 7' x 5' lightweight flatbed promote a thoughtful design that aligns with the needs of wildland firefighters. The low center of gravity ensures stability, while the frame is compliant with National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards, establishing it as an appropriate Type 6 fire engine.
With a remarkable payload capacity of 3,000 pounds—surpassing traditional half-ton pickups—the Dispatcher is tailored to accommodate a 150-gallon water tank alongside essential firefighting apparatus and crew members. Its short wheelbase and tight turning radius allow access to narrow trails, dense forests, and areas where larger fire trucks cannot traverse. Remarkably, while this vehicle competes with larger Type 6 engines, its pricing is in line with a larger Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) but offers significantly higher payload and operational capability.
Enhanced Features and Capabilities
David Ronsen, President of Acela Truck Company, highlights the importance of this new model: “Type 6 apparatus are critical for rapid response and initial attack, especially in terrain where larger trucks are limited. The Dispatcher enhances maneuverability and payload capacity, empowering agencies to select the firefighting system tailored to their mission.”
The Dispatcher is powered by a reliable Pentastar V6 engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and selectable four-wheel drive, ensuring dependable operation on highways and in challenging landscapes—be it hilly, sandy, or muddy. Furthermore, a robust 240-amp alternator caters to the electrical needs of pumps, lights, and communication systems, complementing the ergonomic cab design aimed at reducing operator fatigue during prolonged operations.
Beyond firefighting, the Dispatcher serves in various scenarios, including event standby, beach patrol, lifeguard operations, parking structure fires, and traffic control activities. Notably, Acela has collaborated with QTAC Fire and Rescue to provide a comprehensive skid package solution.
Customization for Diverse Needs
One notable feature of the Dispatcher is its adaptability. The platform is engineered to support various third-party skid units, allowing agencies and upfitters to customize their vehicles according to operational demands. This includes development in patient transport solutions, featuring a Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS)-certified body already in progress.
