On November 5, 2025, the Automotive Hall of Fame (AHF) celebrated two iconic figures, Oscar Ruelas and Eddie Soler, recognizing them with the 2025 Distinguished Service Citation for their significant contributions to the lowrider movement. This prestigious award highlights their relentless dedication to the craft, culture, and community associated with lowriding, which has become a hallmark of American automotive creativity.
The announcement was made during the SEMA Show in Las Vegas on November 4, where the duo was honored before an enthusiastic live audience. The formal presentation of the awards will occur at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 20, 2025.
Sarah Cook, President of the Automotive Hall of Fame, commented, "Oscar Ruelas and Eddie Soler have each dedicated their lives to preserving and elevating lowriding as an art form—bridging craftsmanship, culture, and community. Their creativity and mentorship have inspired generations and expanded the global appreciation of automotive expression."
Both Ruelas and Soler are Vietnam War veterans who utilized their military experiences to cultivate values of discipline and unity within the lowrider community. Their shared commitment to craftsmanship and brotherhood laid the groundwork for the clubs and culture that continue to thrive today.
As co-founders of The Dukes Car Club, established in South Central Los Angeles during the late 1950s, they converted a pastime into a potent cultural movement. Their efforts were instrumental in establishing lowriding as a powerful symbol of Chicano identity and artistry.
Ruelas founded Kustom Oldies in 2004, dedicated to preserving Los Angeles' cruising heritage, while Soler created the Old Memories Car Club in 1978, which now boasts global chapters and supports new builders and enthusiasts through mentorship.
Their enduring legacy is characterized by innovation, mentorship, and deep storytelling, where each vehicle they crafted reflects layers of history, heritage, and pride.
The Distinguished Service Citation is among the oldest honors presented by the Automotive Hall of Fame, which annually recognizes individuals whose exceptional service and commitment have propelled the automotive industry and inspired wider communities. Ruelas and Soler's recognition is a testament to their invaluable contributions, shaping both the past and the future of automotive culture.
This event signifies not just personal achievements but the broader impact of lowriding on the arts, culture, and the automotive landscape, showcasing how these pioneers have inspired not only their peers but countless enthusiasts and future generations. Through their work, Ruelas and Soler have indelibly marked the lowrider narrative, ensuring that it continues to flourish and evolve.
