Exploring Creativity Through Nature: Tadashi Kawamata Joins Ruinart's 2026 Art Program

Exploring Creativity Through Nature

MHD Moët Hennessy Diageo, based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has announced that Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata will be the next participant in its collaborative program, 'Conversations with Nature,' set to debut in February 2026 at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. This initiative seeks to harmonize the brand’s Champagne terroir with artistic expression, engaging some of the world's most talented artists.

The centerpiece of this collaboration will be Kawamata's installation at 4 RUE DES CRAYÈRES, Ruinart's emblematic pavilion in the Champagne region. Throughout the year, his art will be showcased at various international art fairs, emphasizing his commitment to exploring creativity through interaction with nature. Known for his innovative works made from everyday materials like wood and reclaimed furniture, Kawamata builds large-scale installations that challenge perceptions of space and environment.

Bridging Nature and Art

Kawamata's work encourages visitors to interact physically with the installations, whether climbing or walking around them. These structures, often resembling pyramids or shelters, provide differing perspectives and deepen the viewer's connection to their environment. Kawamata's art critically reflects not only on the use of materials but also on the theme of their 'temporary existence' versus 'permanence.' This approach aligns with his ecological awareness, as he uses recycled materials to minimize environmental impact.

During his visit to the Ruinart house, the artist found inspiration in the serene balance between the winery and elements of nature. He experienced early morning mist over the vineyards, the sun's warmth breaking through, and gentle breezes stirring the leaves—elements that many overlook in daily life but which teem with life, from birds to insects.

Drawing from this profound first impression, Kawamata produced a series of drawings and models, serving as conceptual foundations for his installations. These works act as imaginative shelters responding to the fragility of nature while paying homage to its remarkable adaptability—reflecting the evolving techniques that Ruinart has embraced over centuries.

A Focus on Environmental Consciousness

Kawamata advocates for the observation of natural vibrations crucial to the harmony of Champagne. A range of his drawings, models, and on-site installations will be showcased at international contemporary art fairs partnered with Ruinart. His keen interest in miniaturization can be seen in small structures made from recycled wood, enhancing the interactive experience of a larger installation designed for 4 RUE DES CRAYÈRES. “I love the idea of miniaturization,” Kawamata shares. “Large things become smaller, and the installation becomes an object. The relationship between scale and touch changes, leading to a more intimate engagement with the work.”

Kawamata’s partnership with Ruinart culminates in three locally-produced installations—Tree Hut, Nest, and Observatory—that embody the identity of 4 RUE DES CRAYÈRES while highlighting the intersection of art, Champagne craftsmanship, and regional terroir. Guests are encouraged to reflect on the natural vibrations essential to the harmony of the Champagne region, including weather, climate, and biodiversity.

Tadashi Kawamata: An Artist's Journey

Born in Hokkaido in 1953, Kawamata splits his time between Tokyo and Paris, where he investigates the relationship between art, architecture, design, and daily life while emphasizing the impact of material reuse on the environment. His renowned local installations often incorporate wood and furniture components, challenging our preoccupation with the 'permanence of things' through the power of nature. Designed to be experienced, structures like viewpoints and paths invite viewers to shift their perspectives and connect with the environment anew.

His works have been exhibited in various prestigious international galleries and venues, including MAAT in Lisbon, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He was also invited to major biennials, such as the Venice Biennale and the Sydney Biennale, showcasing his commitment to addressing contemporary challenges through art.

Ruinart's Ongoing Artistic Vision

Since its inception in 1729, Ruinart has intertwined art into its identity, beginning with the illustration by Alphonse Mucha that advertised the house’s cuvée. From contributions by contemporary artists to recent immersive installations that focus on ecological values, Ruinart continues to foster dynamic dialogues with nature. The 'Conversations with Nature' program invites artists who share Ruinart's commitment to creativity and interconnectedness, with Kawamata’s works set to enhance the 4 RUE DES CRAYÈRES experience throughout 2026. This location serves as a cultural destination, highlighting the harmony of traditional craftsmanship, innovation, and responsibility.

Ruinart’s dedication to art enables profound connections between individuals and nature, aiming to cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of living in a harmonious world.
