Zoff Initiates Eye Health Project for Future Generations
Zoff, a prominent eyewear brand managed by Intermestic Co., has launched an initiative designed to promote awareness of eye health and protection for individuals and future generations. Launched on July 15, 2026, this initiative, titled the "Eye Project for Future Generations," aims to engage various stakeholders, including educational institutions and industries, in spreading the knowledge necessary to safeguard our eyesight.
In recent years, our visual environment has changed drastically. The increasing usage of digital devices among young people has led to a rise in myopia. Additionally, exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays is contributing to an increasing risk of eye diseases. Observations indicate that many children who require vision correction do not receive adequate help. Additionally, students in middle and high schools, due to their extended time outdoors, are not forming habitual protective measures, such as wearing sunglasses. Once the damage to our eyes is done, it is irreversible, calling for a proactive approach and preventive actions.
To address these challenges, Zoff is redefining the value of eyewear beyond mere vision correction. The brand now positions its eyewear as tools for protecting the individual and society's future. This new project underscores Zoff's commitment to tackling significant issues regarding eye health by collaborating with those on the frontlines facing these challenges. One of the primary goals is to increase the sunglasses usage rate in Japan from 24.5% in 2025 to 50% by 2030.
By disseminating proper knowledge and encouraging positive actions, Zoff seeks not only to enhance individual health but also to contribute to a more prosperous society for all.
The Necessity of the Eye Health Project
The Academic Perspective
Professor Naoki Yamamoto from Fujita Medical University and Yamaguchi University of Science and Technology emphasizes the importance of eye health in enabling people to lead rich lives. The alarming trend of diminishing eyesight among children, coupled with increased UV exposure risks faced by students and working-age individuals, remains a pressing social issue across all generations. Protecting eye health is not solely about preserving vision; it is also about ensuring a healthier future for all, derived from evidence-based medical insights and the importance of eye care permeating daily life and communities.
Economic Considerations
Professor Shintaro Yamaguchi from the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Economics adds that good vision serves as a foundation for learning and working capabilities. Studies show that children with poor vision tend to excel in academics when they wear glasses, and working individuals experience increased productivity once their vision is corrected. Protecting eye health can therefore be viewed as a long-term economic investment in individual potential and societal wealth.
Specific Actions Addressing Eye Health Challenges
Supporting Children's Eyesight
1.
Educational Programs: Zoff has initiated outreach programs in schools that educate students, parents, and educators about eye health. The program has successfully reached approximately 18,600 participants from 188 schools and is expanding further into partnerships with sports organizations like the Japan Dodgeball Association.
2.
Introducing Durable Eyewear - 'Galileo': In collaboration with high schools in Ibaraki and Hiroshima, Zoff plans to introduce 'Galileo,' a robust all-rubber eyewear product. This initiative will promote an environment where children can comfortably engage in sports and outdoor activities while protecting their vision effectively.
High School and Middle School UV Protection Initiatives
The increase in UV rays necessitates action targeted at middle and high school students. Recognizing that only about 11.5% of students regularly wear sunglasses, Zoff has launched an action plan to promote the habit of wearing sunglasses to safeguard against UV exposure. The project's goal is to raise this percentage significantly by 2030 through partnerships with schools nationwide.
Enhancing Eye Health among Workers
Zoff aims to extend its eye health initiative to workers engaged in outdoor professions with initiatives geared towards promoting awareness and support for eye health. Collaborating with New Niigata Fire Department and Sakura Umi Kindergarten, Zoff is exploring the potential benefits of using sunglasses in the workplace to enhance eye health.
Zoff’s comprehensive efforts through the Eye Health Project demonstrate a commitment to a future where eye health is prioritized across all facets of society. To learn more about the initiative or to get involved, please visit their official site:
