Machida City’s Path to Becoming the Leading City of Tama
Recently, the Machida City Future Creation Research Institute, led by Director Hiroo Ichikawa, presented a forward-thinking report titled "Aim for the Leading City of Tama" for 2024. This detailed study outlines the current standing of Machida City among 159 municipalities evaluated based on the Japan Power Cities 2023 metrics.
Overview of the Research Findings
In this evaluation, Machida City ranked below 80th place, significantly lagging behind neighboring cities such as Fuchu, Mitaka, Tachikawa, and Hachioji. Since the baseline measurement in 2020, there has been a lack of improvements, raising concerns about Machida City's ability to overcome negative urban attributes and establish itself as a desirable municipality in the years to come. The subsequent analysis aims to compare Machida with other localities, enhancing its prospects of becoming a "Leading City" in the Tama area.
The Japan Power Cities evaluation quantifies urban characteristics utilizing 86 indicators across six domains, conducted by the Mori Memorial Foundation's Urban Strategy Institute. The research focuses on identifying actionable metrics that could help elevate Machida's standing.
Vision for Growth: Analyzing Key Indicators
The research highlighted promising indicators within Machida's JPC metrics that show potential for improvement. Notably, while metrics such as the percentage of female workers and weekend visitors are performing well within the Tama region, they rank low on a national scale. Conversely, indicators like added value, employment in creative industries, and residential satisfaction are essential areas requiring significant enhancements.
Based on these analyses, the research outlines four hypotheses representing the envisioned targets for Machida.
Three Themes of Desired Change
Through extensive surveys, case studies, and expert consultations, three pillars of progression have emerged:
1.
A Vibrant City:
- Promoting economic benefits from visitors attending sports events, enhancing local dining and tourism experiences.
- Strengthening urban infrastructure, including cinema establishments in the redeveloped station area to welcome both local and outside visitors, thereby increasing city-wide vibrancy.
- Ensuring that visitors perceive Machida as a safe, welcoming, and livable city.
2.
A City with a Supportive Work Environment:
- Cultivating Machida's reputation as a business-friendly city, therefore attracting more companies and aspiring entrepreneurs.
- Creating job opportunities for young residents, mitigating population decline upon graduation.
- Providing career growth options for women who have paused their careers due to family responsibilities, allowing for meaningful employment.
- Encouraging companies to adopt flexible work arrangements to empower female professionals.
3.
A Revitalized Community:
- Transitioning traditional housing complexes into multifunctional places that can cater to living, work, and recreational needs, tackling associated issues.
- Improving transportation, which will attract younger residents and tackle vacant housing and aging demographics in the complexes.
- Cleaning and promoting symbolic streetscapes that enhance the community's image and foster a sense of pride among citizens.
Proposed Initiatives for Progress
In response to the reorganized themes, specific initiatives have been proposed as critical projects:
1.
Enhancing Vibrancy:
- Establishing a framework to connect soccer's draw with local economic growth, coordinating with businesses for home-game events, and employing digital tools to influence consumer behavior.
2.
Creating a Supportive Ecosystem:
- Realizing a Machida-specific startup ecosystem that nurtures both new entrepreneurs and existing companies, facilitating collaboration among educational institutions, investors, and local government.
3.
Revitalizing Communities:
- Increasing the multifunctionality of housing complexes by converting them into art studios and co-working spaces for startups and freelancers.
Through these strategic recommendations, the report envisions a vibrant, economically robust, and culturally rich future for Machida City, establishing it firmly as a leader among the municipalities in the Tama region.
