Exploring Fuel Supply Strategies and Business Opportunities for SAF & Synthetic Fuels

Seminar on SAF and Synthetic Fuels

The Japan Planning Institute (JPI) will be hosting an insightful seminar on June 30, focused on the supply strategies and business opportunities presented by Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and synthetic fuels. This event will feature Hiroshi Hongo, a Senior Research Fellow at Mitsubishi Corporation, who will delve into the compelling topics within this field.

Purpose of the Seminar

As the international aviation sector aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, it faces significant challenges. Long-distance flights are particularly difficult to electrify, making them part of the 'Hard to Abate' categories. This seminar will explore various fuel options, including SAF, which encompasses biofuels and synthetic fuels, as well as emissions trading initiatives. We will examine the high cost of these fuel options and the limitations beyond just pricing. A crucial aspect of the discussion will be balancing diverse choices in fuel adoption while considering the implications of passing costs onto consumers.

Japan, while also striving for net-zero emissions, must find a harmonious solution between environmental goals and economic viability. There is much to learn from international efforts in aviation that can inform Japan's approach.
