JTB Global Marketing & Travel Achieves Prestigious Recognition
In a remarkable achievement, JTB Global Marketing & Travel, based in Shinagawa, Tokyo, was awarded the prestigious
Minister’s Award in the inbound travel sector at the
Tour Grand Prix 2026. The tour, titled
Japón Colorido, was creatively designed for the Spanish and Latin American markets and encompasses an adventurous 13-night journey across lesser-explored regions of Japan, such as Shikoku and Kyushu.
The
Tour Grand Prix, held annually, recognizes exceptional travel programs that enhance the planning and marketing capabilities within the industry, aiming to contribute to Japan's objectives as a tourism-oriented nation. This year, the competition attracted 184 entrants showcasing innovative travel proposals.
About the Award-Winning Tour: Japón Colorido
The
Japón Colorido tour was specifically conceptualized after thorough market research indicating a growing interest among travelers in Japan's cherry blossom season. With many individuals in the Spanish-speaking market taking extended breaks during
Easter, this tour not only allows for a long stay but also ventures beyond the typical Golden Route. Instead, it integrates unique regional experiences that tourists often miss, offering guests memorable activities exclusive to Shikoku and Kyushu.
By adopting a seat-in-coach model with Spanish-speaking guides, the program has ensured viability and profitability while maintaining sustainability. This strategic approach has effectively enhanced the economics of local communities involved, thereby creating significant opportunities for the region.
Addressing Local Attractions and Sustainability
The tour emphasizes not just sightseeing but also addresses local attractions. Notable highlights include staying in traditional townhouses in Ōzu, soaking in the famous hot springs of Beppu, and participating in goma prayer rituals on the Kunisaki Peninsula, showcasing the diverse charms of Japan. By utilizing public ferries, it provides an efficient way for international visitors to visit areas that would be challenging to navigate alone.
Emphasizing sustainability, JTBGMT has clearly defined its commitment to international tourism standards. The itinerary minimizes strain on tourist resources while simultaneously enhancing the travel experience through unique cultural engagements and thoughtful scheduling that avoids overcrowding. This initiative is not only beneficial for tourists but sets a benchmark for sustainable tourism practices in the industry.
Future Prospects
JTBGMT is keen on incorporating customer feedback and adapting to market trends. As part of their ongoing efforts, they have announced two additional tours extending the length to 14 nights and 15 days, focusing on themes aligned with local attractions in Kumamoto. Set to launch in March 2027, these tours are a testament to JTBGMT's commitment to expand and enhance the inbound tourism experience in Japan.
Judge Committee’s Comments
In a world where inbound tourism is continually evolving, the committee noted that
Japón Colorido exemplifies a qualitative shift towards immersive travel experiences that blend traditional Japanese communities with international visitors. The initiative transcended language barriers and established a platform for global cultural exchange while also addressing the challenges of overtourism and dispersing visitors across various locales.
From meticulous attention to detail in travel etiquette to fostering a safe environment, the tour has laid out a pathway that could inspire future initiatives in the inbound tourism sector.
Closing Thoughts from JTB
Masanori Oba, head of Iberia-America Sales Division at JTB, reflected on the achievement, expressing gratitude for the recognition: “This award is a significant honor. Our goal was always to draw attention to Shikoku and Kyushu while creating memorable experiences around the cherry blossom season.
