Greenberg Traurig Welcomes Daniel O. Canales

Global law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP has announced the addition of Daniel O. Canales to its Chicago office, where he will serve as a shareholder in the firm's Labor & Employment Practice. Canales transitions to Greenberg Traurig from Duane Morris, where he held the position of partner.

With an impressive portfolio, Canales brings significant experience in representing employers across various sectors in labor and employment-related matters. Throughout his career, he has tackled cases in state and federal courts, arbitration panels, and administrative agencies nationwide. His extensive client base ranges from small enterprises to large multinational corporations. His areas of expertise include industries such as retail, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, and banking.

Co-Managing Shareholders of Greenberg Traurig’s Chicago office, Rita M. Powers and Meredith L. Katz, expressed their enthusiasm about Canales joining the team. "Dan is a talented and highly regarded employment lawyer who has built a strong reputation for delivering results for employers, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the team," they remarked in a joint statement. This decision underscores the firm’s commitment to enhance its capabilities in Chicago and across the United States, further strengthening its well-established Labor & Employment Practice.

Canales has successfully first-chaired various jury trials, bench trials, and arbitrations in diverse case types, including wage and hour collective actions, discrimination claims, and issues surrounding workplace violence. His litigation practice covers claims related to major laws such as Title VII, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, and the Fair Labor Standards Act, along with corresponding state and local legislation.

Notably, Canales also advises companies on commercial contract disputes, restrictive covenants, and trade secrets. He is skilled in procuring and defending temporary restraining orders and injunctions while leading internal investigations into harassment and fraud. His tactical acumen extends to corporate due diligence, reorganizations, and collective bargaining negotiations.

Besides his legal work, Canales shares his knowledge as an educator. He serves as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, teaching employment law, enriching his academic ties and community influence.

Canales highlighted the advantages of joining Greenberg Traurig, stating, "The firm’s depth of resources, global platform, and reputation for cross-practice collaboration mirror my clients' needs." He conveyed his eagerness to continue assisting employers through complex legal challenges alongside a team dedicated to exceptional client service.

Canales earned his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law, obtaining a Certificate in Labor and Employment Law, and holds a B.A. from Northwestern University as an Evans Scholar.
