Enhancing Automotive Maintenance with Advanced Technologies Across Japan: 31st Meeting Announcement

Upcoming 31st Meeting for Automotive Maintenance Technology Enhancement

The automotive maintenance industry in Japan is faced with two significant challenges: the adoption of new technologies and securing skilled workforce. In order to maintain an environment in which quality automotive maintenance services are accessible across all regions, stakeholders must collaborate to promote enhancements in maintenance technologies and strategies for workforce securing.

Background

In recent years, the rapidly growing adoption of advanced safety technologies such as automatic braking systems, as well as the shift towards electric vehicles, has led to remarkable advancements in automotive technology. At the same time, there is a growing shortage of skilled automotive mechanics, which poses a significant issue for the maintenance industry. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has been addressing these challenges since 2012 through the establishment of the “Automotive Maintenance Technology Enhancement Committee.” This committee focuses on identifying and continuously working towards solutions for specific challenges within the industry. Now, the 31st meeting is scheduled.

Meeting Details

  • - Date and Time: October 27, 2022 (Monday) from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
  • - Location: AP Shinbashi “D Room” (hybrid meeting with web conferencing available) at 4F, Shinbashi Place, 1-12-9 Shinbashi, Minato City, Tokyo.
  • - Committee Members: As detailed in attached document.

Agenda

1. Initiatives for Enhancing Scan Tool Functionality
In recent years, due to advancements in automotive technology and cybersecurity measures, there has been an increase in malfunctions that can only be resolved by dealerships. If this trend continues, independent specialty shops may struggle to offer necessary services. To adapt to these new technologies, independent shops must improve the functionality of their scan tools to dealership levels. Progress reports regarding specific approaches will be shared.

2. Measures for Securing Workforce in Fiscal Year 2022
A discussion will address approaches for securing workforce in the upcoming fiscal year, considering current challenges within the automotive maintenance industry.
