An Intriguing Journey into Existence: Shinnosuke Tojo's Solo Exhibition
Tokyo International Gallery, located in Shinagawa's Tennozu area, is set to unveil Shinnosuke Tojo's solo exhibition titled "3/4oz and the Chocolate Factory". The event kicks off on July 5, 2025, and runs until August 2, 2025. This exhibition promises to showcase Tojo's unique perspectives and artistic interpretations surrounding the concept of existence.
Tojo is renowned for his multifaceted artistic approach, integrating painting, sculpture, and installation. Throughout his work, he persistently questions the very essence of existence—drawing attention not merely to physical manifestations but also to those intangible aspects that mirror our own reflections, such as the concept of a “nonexistent existence.” His art encourages viewers to reassess their perceptions and connect with their imagination, thereby recognizing the unseen aspects of their identities.
This exhibition marks Tojo's first solo showcase at Tokyo International Gallery following his participation in the 2022 exhibition titled "Have you ever seen a ghost?" Here, attendees will be invited to navigate the ambiguous divide between tangible reality and the fluidity of one’s self. Each piece serves as a window into an uncertain world that invites contemplation and introspection.
Tojo has cultivated his artistic vision using various materials, with a strong emphasis on metal, which takes center stage in many of his creations. His series "10," for instance, incorporates metal surface markings, layering drawings, paintings, and photographs that create a coexistence of reality and illusion. Similarly, in series "11," diagonal markings on aluminum surfaces capture reflections of those very lines, merging visible and illusory elements into a singular visual narrative.
Another significant element in Tojo's work is "BOYa," an imaginary friend crafted during his childhood. The discovery of this sculpture years later prompted Tojo to reconsider the implications of existence. He recalls the profound sense of uncertainty that arose when this object transitioned from the realm of memory to physical reality. This piece has since evolved into a recurring motif, symbolizing the relationship between creation and existence while constantly challenging the boundaries of materiality.
Tojo’s reflections extend beyond personal narratives; they delve into philosophical inquiries reminiscent of the beliefs of a physician who once postulated that a soul might weigh 3/4 oz. He provocatively ponders whether this weight could also represent the weight of imagination, stimulating dialogue about the existence that transcends mere physical materials.
