Huawei and Aztelekom's Initiative Transforms Azerbaijan's Connectivity Landscape
In a remarkable achievement for digital accessibility, Aztelekom, a subsidiary of AZCON Holding, along with the technological giant Huawei, has announced that its national broadband connectivity strategy 'Online Azerbaijan' now covers an impressive 99.7% of the country. This initiative has significantly enhanced Internet access for nearly three million households and businesses, reaching even the most remote villages and towns. Through the installation of two million new connections in just the last two years, Azerbaijan has ensured that practically all 10.45 million citizens have access to high-speed Internet.
The initiative was launched by the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport with the aim of not only transforming internet access across cities but also tackling the longstanding issue of digital disparity found in rural areas. Hasan Omarov, CEO of Aztelekom, expressed that this initiative is not just a technological upgrade but a strategic investment to bridge the digital divide and promote equitable access to digital services. He emphasized that this project is one of the largest infrastructural initiatives in the nation's history, ensuring that citizens, regardless of their location, have equal access to reliable high-speed internet and digital opportunities.
Huawei's significant technical prowess and proven capability to execute large-scale projects have been pivotal in streamlining the development of Azerbaijan's digital infrastructure. The initiative prioritizes connecting even the most remote communities with state-of-the-art fiber optics, contributing to the government's goal of increasing average Internet speeds to 50 Mbps by 2025. This ambitious target is part of a larger digital inclusion program called TECH4ALL, which Huawei has been actively involved in, ensuring that advanced technologies reach every corner of the country.
As part of this effort, the average Internet speed in Azerbaijan—a mere 11.7 Mbit/s at the project's outset—has skyrocketed to over 88.84 Mbit/s, marking a sevenfold increase. This improvement has led to Azerbaijan making significant progress in the United Nations' e-government development index, achieving five international awards, and being recognized by the Harvard Business Review as a prime example of successful digital inclusion.
Communities that were once isolated are experiencing newfound opportunities, especially villages like Khinalig, which are now integrated into the global economy. The introduction of high-speed internet has empowered local businesses, facilitated tourism, and allowed local craftsmen to showcase their products worldwide via streaming services. Furthermore, students in rural areas now have unprecedented access to online education resources, mirroring the educational opportunities available to their urban counterparts.
In addition to enhancing education, the project is paving the way for telemedicine initiatives and the development of smart cities across the nation. The next phase of 'Online Azerbaijan' will focus on extending 5G technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) to even more remote regions while emphasizing energy efficiency and green technology adoption. Through these strategic moves, Azerbaijan aims to solidify its position in the digital landscape and ensure that its citizens can thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Huawei’s TECH4ALL initiative promotes a long-term action plan to drive digital inclusion and sustainability, addressing the challenges presented by the digital divide. As this transformative journey continues, the nation is set on a path toward greater connectivity and prosperity. For more information on the TECH4ALL initiative, visit Huawei's official website.
