NSK Summer Engineering Challenge 2025
In August 2025, NSK Ltd., a leader in the manufacturing and engineering sector, is set to launch its highly anticipated event: the 'NSK Summer Engineering Challenge 2025.' This initiative is tailored for female students interested in pursuing careers in engineering and technology, aiming to support and inspire the next generation of women in these fields.
The 'Ricoh Challenge', known as 'Riko Challe', has been a collaborative effort supported by the Japanese government and various organizations since 2018. It focuses on empowering young women to explore and succeed in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers. NSK has proudly participated in this initiative for seven years, helping to create pathways for women in industries that traditionally lack female representation.
This year's event features exciting hands-on experiences both in-person and online. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with female engineers from NSK, gaining insights and guidance about career choices in engineering. With no special skills required to participate, the event is designed to be inclusive and engaging for everyone.
In-Person Experience: Build Your Marble Machine
On August 5, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the in-person event will be held at NSK's headquarters in Shinagawa, Tokyo. This hands-on workshop focuses on the design and assembly of a 'Marble Machine', an interactive toy that teaches fundamental engineering principles. Girls in grades 7 to 12 will draft plans, assemble parts, and engage in a mock design engineer experience.
Additionally, participants will learn about the latest in digital fabrication techniques through demonstrations involving advanced tools such as 3D scanners and printers, illustrating the intersection of creativity and technology.
Moreover, for the first time, the event will include time for networking with female engineers, giving attendees a rare opportunity to learn from role models in the field and inspire them to consider their future paths.
Online Experience: Discover Manufacturing Secrets
On August 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, the online version of the event will offer high school and university students a unique perspective on the engineering industry. This session will feature live factory tours presented by NSK's female engineers, providing insight into the bearing manufacturing process — an integral part of NSK’s operations. Participants will also have the opportunity to assemble a bearing during a guided online assembly activity, interacting with professionals as they are introduced to the vital role these components play in various industries.
Additionally, the online experience will include a video message from professors at leading technical universities, discussing the appeal of engineering careers and the importance of innovation in the manufacturing sector.
