This project, branded as "Powered by Carbon Neutral Gas," is intended to start its practical demonstration in August 2026, marking a significant step toward achieving carbon neutrality in urban gas consumption.

The core feature of this initiative lies in its innovative ability to digitally certify the consumption of bio-methane, sourced internationally, at specific facilities. Hitachi has implemented this solution at the Hitachi Origin Park, a significant site located in Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where the company was founded. The efforts of both companies will enable stakeholders to demonstrate that the carbon dioxide emissions from urban gas are effectively zero. This not only serves as evidence for customers aiming for decarbonization but also provides suppliers a clear way to illustrate the environmental value of international bio-methane.

Tokyo Gas has long been a pioneer in supplying bio-methane and is leveraging its expertise in renewable energy certification through its "Powered by RE" service, which visualizes renewable electricity usage. This platform now extends its capabilities to the gas sector, integrating data from end-use points and consumption meters. Through this service, the detailed consumption metrics, including who used the gas, where, and how much, will be outlined, creating a transparent tracking system.

Historically, companies had to rely on purchasing environmental value certificates to demonstrate carbon neutrality in heat energy use, which often lacked tangible proof. This new framework allows for these claims to be substantiated with digital data. For instance, installations such as gas air-conditioning systems and factory facilities can now officially showcase their contribution to carbon neutrality through real gas consumption records.

Moreover, this service, which has received third-party certification from the Power by RE Certification Committee, will streamline the verification process, ensuring that the environmental values sought by customers are accurately represented. This initial demonstration phase is just the beginning, as the partners plan to later expand to include additional carbon-neutral technologies like e-methane, hydrogen, and ammonia.

Hitachi's overarching strategy termed "Inspire 2027" emphasizes sustainability, and the current initiative embodies their aim of merging digital technologies and data to create new values in the fields of energy and environment. They plan to integrate AI to forecast power generation, energy demand, and market prices into their offerings, named "HMAX Industry," which they hope to roll out to both domestic and international markets.

On the other hand, Tokyo Gas Group has set its sights on achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 through its "Compass2030" vision. They are fervently collaborating with a multitude of global partners to combine various strategies focused on renewable energy sources, such as bio-methane and e-methane. By utilizing international bio-methane, the company aims to expedite the path towards carbon neutrality, consistent with governmental policies promoting carbon-neutral initiatives by 2050.

Furthermore, the collaborative project between Hitachi City and Hitachi seeks to leverage real-world data gathered from this demonstration initiative to tackle social challenges and spark new business opportunities. Key to their strategy is the development of a sustainable local energy supply model that emphasizes environmental considerations.

As regulations concerning the handling of overseas bio-methane evolve in response to the national climate goals, Tokyo Gas is poised to create urban gas offerings with zero baseline emissions.
