Dr. Stephanie J. Bannister Set to Lead FirstGen Forward as New President
On October 31, 2025, Dr. Stephanie J. Bannister was appointed as the new president of FirstGen Forward, effective from November 1, 2025. This announcement comes at a crucial time for the organization, which has played a significant role in advocating for first-generation college students. Bannister succeeds Dr. Kevin Kruger, the interim CEO and one of the original founders of the organization established with the Suder Foundation in 2017.
Having previously served as the vice president of the FirstGen Forward Network, Bannister has a proven track record of enhancing the organization's reach, growing the network to nearly 500 institutions dedicated to promoting access and ensuring the success of first-gen students. Her experience in higher education spans over two decades, during which she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing student success and fostering community.
Before joining FirstGen Forward, Bannister worked at Kansas State University (K-State) as the assistant vice provost for student success. There, she initiated various programs aimed at improving student engagement and success since joining the university in 2001. Her efforts have been instrumental in creating supportive environments for first-generation students and advocating for their unique needs.
In her own words, Bannister expressed her honor in stepping into this pivotal role: “More than half of all undergraduate students identify as first-generation, and supporting their success should be a universal goal.” She acknowledged the foundational work done by Kruger and emphasized the importance of continuing to empower first-gen students.
FirstGen Forward has steadily evolved since its inception as an initiative of NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. In August 2024, it became an independent non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the educational landscape for first-gen students. The organization’s mission is to partner with a diverse range of colleges and universities to foster systemic changes and create environments conducive to their success across education, career, and life.
Dr. Kevin Kruger, expressing his satisfaction with the selection of Bannister, emphasized her rich experience and alignment with the organization’s goals. “Stephanie understands the FirstGen Forward Network and is committed to the movement as it grows,” he stated confidently.
Bannister's dedication to advocating for first-generation college students extends beyond administrative roles. Her initiatives at K-State included establishing the Office for First-generation Students, which provides resources and guidance to ensure these students can achieve their academic and professional aspirations. Before her significant contributions at K-State, she served as the director of residence halls at the University of Kansas, overseeing housing operations while advancing her education in higher education administration.
Moreover, Bannister has traveled across the country as a consultant for the Alpha Gamma Delta International Fraternity, where she lent her expertise on strategic planning and accreditation matters. She also serves as an external reviewer of programs, showcasing her versatility in supporting educational institutions and their missions.
A proud graduate of Fort Hays State University, Bannister holds a B.A., an M.S. from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. in education from K-State. In addition to her leadership role at FirstGen Forward, she engages actively with the Manhattan community in Kansas, contributing to local educational initiatives.
As she takes office, Bannister reflects on the current challenges and opportunities facing first-gen students, especially concerning funding and institutional support. Recognizing the pivotal role that FirstGen Forward plays in advocating for these students, she is focused on enhancing the organization's impact in an ever-evolving educational landscape.
In conclusion, Dr. Stephanie J. Bannister's appointment as president of FirstGen Forward marks an exciting chapter for the organization. With her extensive background in higher education and her commitment to first-generation student success, she is poised to lead the movement with vision and purpose, ensuring that countless students have the support they need to thrive.
