Rwanda Celebrates Milestone of Smart Education Project and DigiTruck Launch
Rwanda Celebrates the Completion of Smart Education Project and Launch of DigiTruck
On October 3, 2025, Rwanda proudly announced the completion of the first phase of its Smart Education project, alongside the launch of the innovative DigiTruck TECH4ALL, in collaboration with Huawei. Hosted at Kagarama High School in Kigali, this event highlighted Rwanda’s commitment to digital transformation in education and upgrading the digital skills of its citizens.
Joseph Nsengimana, the Minister of Education, noted, “Today’s joint celebration signifies more than just a ceremony; it’s a testament to Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to inclusive and technology-based education. These initiatives strengthen international cooperation, promote digital equity, and foster sustainable national development.” The Smart Education project has successfully connected 1,500 schools to high-speed internet, established two state-of-the-art data centers, and laid the groundwork for a dedicated educational network to support digital teaching and learning throughout the nation.
Aligned with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and its National Strategy for Transformation, this initiative aims to transition Rwanda into a globally competitive knowledge-based economy. Looking forward, the benefits of this project will expand to further bridge the digital divide and continue supplying cutting-edge technologies to teachers and students. As a result, around 1.5 million students across Rwanda, including those in Kigali and remote rural communities, will now have equitable access to high-quality educational resources. Jin Jiqing, CEO of Huawei Technologies Rwanda, stated, “A student in Kigali can now share knowledge remotely with peers in Rusizi. These are the real impacts of digital inclusion—it bridges distances, dismantles barriers, and allows every child to dream big.”
In addition to the Smart Education initiative, Huawei, in collaboration with the Ministries of ICT and Innovation and Education, has launched DigiTruck, aimed at providing free, tailored training on digital skills to disadvantaged communities. The focus is particularly on young people, girls, and school dropouts. Equipped with laptops, internet access, and digital learning devices, the DigiTruck is a solar-powered mobile classroom that can travel to the most remote communities, with experienced instructors available to ensure training even in areas lacking electricity or internet access.
Eraste Rurangwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, remarked, “Initiatives like DigiTruck represent more than just technology; they are gateways to opportunities, empowerment, and the future of Rwanda as a knowledge-based economy.” In line with the NST2 goal of training one million citizens in digital skills, the DigiTruck will cover all 30 districts of Rwanda, targeting to provide training to 5,000 Rwandans over the next three years. To date, Huawei’s DigiTrucks have trained over 17,000 individuals across seven countries in various digital skills, including the use of office devices and software, job applications online, starting an online business, and coding and robotics.
The Smart Education and DigiTruck initiatives reflect Rwanda’s ongoing commitment to education and technology, paving the way for a brighter future for its citizens. As the country continues to embrace digital transformation, it aims to inspire other nations to follow suit and invest in technology as a tool for development and equity in education.
