Octopus Energy's Summer Happy Hour Sees Record Participation and Savings in 2026

Overview of Summer Happy Hour 2026

Octopus Energy has released compelling interim results for their 'Summer Happy Hour 2026,' which started on July 16, 2026. This program has seen tremendous engagement, with one in three eligible customers participating, marking a staggering 1.9 times increase compared to last summer's campaign. Among the top 30 electricity companies in Japan, Octopus Energy ranks first in growth rate when comparing it with 2024 data, showcasing a remarkable growth rate of 63%.

Remarkable Participation Figures

In the present summer, around 199,135 accounts have joined the Happy Hour initiative, which is a significant increase from the previous year's total of about 106,749 accounts. Additionally, the total discounts have now reached around 36.5 million yen at this midway point, surpassing the entire previous year's campaign total of about 36 million yen. The participation rate among eligible customers has also risen impressively from 24.5% last summer to 33.3% this year, marking an increase of 8.8 percentage points.

The Concept of Happy Hour

The Happy Hour program is designed to take advantage of abundant electricity generated from solar power during peak sunlight hours, specifically from 11 AM to 1 PM. During this time, Octopus Energy offers a discount of 8 yen per kWh. This initiative encourages customers to shift their energy usage rather than forcing them to curtail their power consumption. It's a refreshing approach aimed at fostering smart energy use and enhancing comfort levels for users during the demanding summer season.

Increasing Engagement Over the Years

Octopus Energy's Happy Hour participation rate has consistently risen in recent years. Following the summer of 2025, where participation was at 24.5%, the winter of 2025-2026 saw it rise to 27.4%, and now the summer of 2026 has achieved a remarkable rate of 33.3%. Notably, over 70% of participants from last summer have returned for this year’s program, demonstrating that Happy Hour is a valued offering that provides ongoing opportunities for customers to save on energy costs.

Significant Savings and Energy Usage

At the halfway mark of the campaign, approximately 4,559,873 kWh of electricity has been subject to discounts. This amount is comparable to the monthly energy usage of around 15,000 average households. The total discounts provided have exceeded 36.5 million yen, contributing an average of 185 yen back to each participating household. As the campaign progresses, this average discount is anticipated to rise to approximately 390 yen by the end, equating to the electricity cost of running a typical household air conditioner for about 25 hours.

Supporting Households Amid Economic Pressures

In response to ongoing fluctuations in energy prices and inflation, Octopus Energy has implemented various pricing plans and discount programs aimed at alleviating financial burdens for customers. Their offerings include 'Simple Octopus,' which features no base charges or fuel cost adjustments and a fixed rate for 12 months. Additionally, their referral program provides discounts for both the referrer and the person referred, allowing customers to benefit from sharing the service with friends.

Choosing When to Use Electricity

In the context of continued heat waves, abstaining from necessary electricity use, such as air conditioning, poses health risks like heat stroke. It is crucial for consumers to focus not solely on cutting back but also on optimizing their energy usage times. Happy Hour encourages customers to utilize appliances like washers and dishwashers during discounted hours, providing a chance to shift energy demands to more affordable times while maintaining necessary cooling.
