Raytheon Secures $729 Million for Counter-Drone Systems In U.S., Qatar, and Jordan
Raytheon Secures $729 Million for Counter-Drone Systems
Raytheon, a key business unit of RTX (NYSE: RTX), has recently been awarded a significant contract worth $729 million aimed at developing advanced counter-drone technology. This initiative will provide crucial components of the Low, slow, small unmanned aircraft Integrated Defeat System (LIDS) to the U.S. Army, alongside international clients such as Qatar and Jordan.
LIDS features two notable technologies: the Ku-band Radio Frequency Sensor (KuRFS) and the Coyote® effector. These components are pivotal in enhancing the effectiveness of defense systems against drone threats. Notably, this contract marks the first time these technologies—KuRFS and Coyote—are being sold internationally.
Understanding LIDS
LIDS is designed to deliver comprehensive protection against drone incursions by utilizing 360-degree threat detection through the KuRFS, while Coyote's advanced capabilities enable the interception of both individual drones and swarming UAVs. These systems have demonstrated substantial combat efficacy, with hundreds of successful interception missions conducted in real-world scenarios.
Tom Laliberty, president of Land and Air Defense Systems at Raytheon, stated, "LIDS provides a proven and cost-effective layer of defense that ensures allied forces have the protection they need against hostile drones." This indicates the technology’s essential role in modern warfare, where drone threats are increasingly prevalent.
Investments in Production and Technology
In response to the growing demand for effective counter-drone systems, RTX is significantly ramping up its production capabilities and integrating new technologies into its existing solutions. Key upgrades being pursued include improving launch times, speeds, and operational ranges, thus ensuring that the Coyote interceptors remain at the forefront of counter-drone technology.
One of the highlighted objectives of this initiative is to maintain a competitive edge against evolving threats, categorized as increasingly sophisticated due to rapid technological advancements in drone technology.
A Legacy of Defense Technology
Raytheon has a storied history, being a leading provider of defense solutions for over 100 years. The company specializes in a wide range of fields, including air and missile defense, smart weapons, and advanced sensors across various domains such as land, air, sea, and space. This latest contract adds to its extensive portfolio and highlights its commitment to innovation and excellence in defense technology.
Likewise, RTX encompasses a broad spectrum of operations globally, employing over 180,000 individuals aimed at pushing the boundaries of technology to protect and connect societies worldwide. The firm continues to lead in developing next-generation solutions that are essential for navigating the complexities of modern security challenges. In 2025, it anticipated achieving sales exceeding $88 billion, reflecting its robust growth and significance in the global defense market.
The contract with Raytheon underscores the increasing importance of counter-drone technologies in contemporary defense strategies, positioning both the U.S. and its allies—like Qatar and Jordan—better to face unprecedented aerial threats. As drone technology continues to evolve, investments in effective countermeasures will be crucial for national and global security.
