Okubo's exhibition features mesmerizing images captured during his journey alongside the research team, revealing the stark yet beautiful landscape of Antarctica. The expedition's narratives include scenes from research vessels like the Shirase sailing through ice-covered waters and the iconic Showa Station, situated approximately 14,000 km from Japan. Viewers will be transported to this extreme environment, offering a glimpse of the harsh realities faced by the team in their scientific endeavors.
Notably, the exhibition will not only consist of captivating photographs but will also feature videos capturing the essence of life at Showa Station and the breathtaking yet formidable nature surrounding the area. Rui Okubo: A Snapshot of a Rising Talent
Born in 1983 in Akita City, Rui Okubo graduated from Akita Prefectural High School and earned a degree from Hirosaki University. After joining Akita Sakigake Shimpo in 2006, Okubo honed his craft across various departments, ultimately specializing as a photojournalist. His impressive portfolio includes coverage of significant events such as the Koshien High School Baseball Tournament and the Tokyo Olympics.
In recognition of his talent, Okubo has received several awards, including the prestigious Tohoku Photojournalists Association Award. His commitment to engaging storytelling through images is evident in his work, showcasing a unique perspective on both local and international events.
About THE GALLERY
Established in 2017 in Tokyo and Osaka, THE GALLERY serves as a platform for promoting photographic culture. It features high-quality exhibitions from renowned photographers using Nikon equipment and hosts various thematic exhibitions, including member showcases and collaborative events.
The exhibition will open in Tokyo from July 7 to July 20, 2026, followed by a showing in Osaka from July 30 to August 10, 2026. The gallery operates from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM, with special early closing hours on the final day. The talk events will take place on July 11 in Tokyo and August 1 in Osaka, welcoming a select number of participants for an in-depth exploration of the Antarctic experiences.
