Costa Rica Showcases Ornamental Plants to Over 43 Countries at IPM Essen
Costa Rica Strengthens Its Global Presence at IPM Essen
Costa Rica has taken a significant step in bolstering its status in the ornamental plant sector by participating in the prestigious IPM Essen trade fair held in Germany from January 28 to January 31, 2025. After more than 15 years of showcasing its offerings at this major event, the country aims to solidify its leadership in the European market.
Gathering over 36,000 visitors from 43 countries, the IPM Essen trade fair serves as an ideal platform to exhibit the diversity and quality of Costa Rican ornamental plants. The country's delegation, led by the Promotora del Comercio Exterior de Costa Rica (PROCOMER), consists of 11 companies eager to explore new business opportunities. This year, the presence at IPM Essen highlights Costa Rica's commitment to entering traditional European markets, as well as emerging markets in regions like the Middle East.
According to PROCOMER, the Costa Rican ornamental plant sector generated over $80 million in exports by the end of November 2024. The primary markets for these exports include major European countries such as the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. With such impressive export numbers, Europe has become a key region for Costa Rica's ornamental plants due to rising demand in import-leading countries.
Mario Sáenz, the Manager of Export Development at PROCOMER, remarked, "Our participation in IPM Essen for over 15 years has been crucial for the internationalization of our ornamental plant industry. This event is vital for consolidating our presence in Europe, which represents the second most important market for our exports, and exploring new opportunities in high-income markets like the Middle East.”
The Costa Rican stand showcases plants from various regions, including Occidente, Sarapiquí, Guácimo, and Pococí. Featured products encompass a vast array, from different species of ficus to alocasia plants, zamioculcas, and the renowned Phalaenopsis orchids. All of these products are noted for their outstanding quality and sustainability practices, reflecting the values of Costa Rica's national brand.
Among the participating companies is Agro Orchids, which is attending IPM Essen for the first time. Federico Gil, the General Manager, expressed, "With over 20 years of expertise, we specialize in producing and exporting Phalaenopsis orchids to more than 15 countries. Our debut at IPM Essen is an invaluable chance to connect directly with suppliers and potential clients, expand our presence in global markets, and enhance our production capacity to meet international demands.”
During the trade fair, Costa Rican enterprises have the chance to engage with significant international buyers such as Adomex, Anthura, Royal Flora Holland, and Florensis. This presents an outstanding opportunity to discuss the latest global market trends, including new varieties and sustainability requirements.
In conclusion, the participation of Costa Rica at IPM Essen not only showcases the nation’s exceptional biodiversity but also emphasizes its commitment to sustainability and quality in the ornamental plant sector. As the country seeks to expand its footprint in both traditional and emerging markets, events like IPM Essen will play a pivotal role in facilitating connections and generating substantial business growth for its local industries.
