Matson's New Enhanced Intermodal Cargo Security Program
In a significant response to the alarming increase in thefts within the intermodal cargo sector, Matson, Inc. has proudly announced the initiation of a cutting-edge security program. This initiative follows a collaborative effort with BNSF Railway and War-Lok, aiming to bolster the safety of international cargo that traverses the extensive network operated by BNSF.
Slated to launch in the second quarter of 2026, this enhanced security program will implement two crucial layers of protection for most of Matson’s international intermodal cargo. Remarkably, these measures will come at no extra cost to customers, showcasing Matson's unwavering commitment to safeguarding client shipments. The cargo security enhancements will modify how containers are protected during transportation from Los Angeles to key destinations including Chicago, Memphis, and Dallas.
Among the most notable features of this new program is the deployment of War-Lok security devices on every international shipping container. This state-of-the-art equipment represents the first level of security, adding an additional safeguard against potential theft during transit. Furthermore, Matson has negotiated a unique agreement with BNSF Railway to strategically position its containers in the lower well of intermodal rail cars, further diminishing the likelihood of cargo theft on the route from Los Angeles to Chicago. This secure placement will also extend to cargo transported through the Chicago gateway to select Eastern U.S. locations, ensuring comprehensive protection throughout the inland journey.
John Lauer, Matson's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, expressed pride in the company’s history of innovation and leadership within the industry. He highlighted, “We’re raising the bar with what we believe to be the most comprehensive carrier–led intermodal security program in the market—setting a new standard for cargo protection.” This initiative aims to significantly reduce exposure to theft, reinforcing Matson's promise to maintain the highest levels of security across its logistics operations.
Although it is recognized that no security measure can completely eradicate risk, the new layers of protection are anticipated to dramatically reduce vulnerability and thus enhance peace of mind for customers utilizing Matson’s services. Lauer emphasized the importance of these enhanced security measures, noting that “While no security system can eliminate all risk, these added measures significantly reduce exposure to theft and reinforce Matson's commitment to protecting customer cargo throughout the inland journey.”
Matson has established itself as a frontrunner in expedited shipping services within the Transpacific trade lane. The company operates two highly efficient services, the China-Long Beach Express (CLX) and the Matson Asia Express (MAX), which are recognized for their weekly departures and industry-leading ocean transit times from China, Southeast Asia, and beyond. Furthermore, Matson offers unmatched destination services, frequently including same or next-day freight availability along with 100% wheeled operations at its off-dock container yards.
Founded in 1882, Matson has developed into a leading provider of ocean transportation and logistics services, catering primarily to the domestic non-contiguous economies of Hawaii, Alaska, and Guam, and extending its services to various island economies in Micronesia. In addition to its international offerings, Matson also runs expedited services from China to the West Coast of the United States while servicing destinations as distant as Okinawa, Japan. Matson Logistics, which came into existence in 1987, significantly expands the geographic coverage of the company's transportation network across North America and Asia, further integrating logistics services that encompass rail intermodal, highway brokerage, warehousing, freight consolidation, and supply chain management.
As Matson gears up to implement its enhanced cargo security program, customers can anticipate a new era of safety and reliability within the intermodal cargo sector—a crucial development amid increasing concerns over theft in the industry. With this move, Matson not only strengthens its position as a leader in transportation but also pledges to prioritize customer safety and service excellence in the logistics landscape.
