Golden Gas Kicks Off Open Season for Joy Station Storage Initiative in Kansas

Golden Gas Launches Open Season for Joy Station Storage Project

On June 16, 2025, Golden Gas Service Company, commonly known as Golden Gas, announced the initiation of a non-binding open season designed to gauge market interest in its upcoming Joy Station Natural Gas Storage Project. This ambitious initiative aims to provide up to 2.4 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of firm natural gas storage capacity. The forthcoming facility will be an intrastate high-deliverability salt cavern located in Kiowa County, Kansas.

The open season will remain open from June 16 until July 18, 2025, during which interested parties are encouraged to submit non-binding bids for storage capacity. These early participants will have the unique opportunity to engage in a future binding open season and negotiate precise precedent agreements, which could pave the way for long-term contractual relationships.

Joy Station is expected to deliver unparalleled flexibility in terms of both injection and withdrawal capabilities, designed to address the rising demand from Local Distribution Companies (LDCs), power generators, marketers, and industrial users situated throughout the Midcontinent region. The Phase I design is set to accommodate 2.4 Bcf of working gas and is expected to enable an injection and withdrawal rate up to 160,000 Mcf per day, pending final engineering assessments and permitting.

Upon the completion of Phase IV, the facility aims to achieve a capacity of up to 9.6 Bcf of working gas, as well as daily injection and withdrawal capabilities of up to 640,000 Mcf. This projected capacity represents a significant portion, estimated at over 25%, of the total natural gas storage deliverability within the state of Kansas.

Strategically located at the heart of the Midcontinent both geographically and commercially, the Joy Station facility will be connected to several major intrastate and interstate pipelines, including Southern Star, Cheyenne Plains, KGS, Northern Natural, ANR, and PEPL. The site has successfully undergone geological assessments—showing favorable conditions—and is progressing toward acquiring its Class I injection and storage permits from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) by this summer.

Alan Staab, President and CEO of Golden Gas, expressed optimism about the Project, stating, "This open season represents the next step in bringing a new source of flexibility and reliability to the Kansas and Midcontinent markets. Joy Station's location, performance profile, and interconnectivity are tailored to help customers manage volatility and optimize supply portfolios in both peak and off-peak periods."

Golden Gas is poised to make a final investment decision (FID) after the open season concludes and the state permitting process is finalized. The company anticipates that service will commence in the second quarter of 2029.

For interested companies, a mutual confidentiality agreement (CA) must be signed before they can receive comprehensive bid instructions and access to confidential project documentation. The CA, along with public notices and contact details, can be located on the official Golden Gas website at Golden Gas Joy Station Project.

Incorporated in 1998 and headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Golden Gas Service Company is a privately held entity specializing in energy infrastructure. With a commitment to safety, reliability, and innovative solutions, the company already manages 1.1 BCF of natural gas storage in Oklahoma and is on track to become a top natural gas storage hub in the Midcontinent region.
