Inspired by Personal Experience: WELL BE CHECK's Journey
In the heart of Tokyo, a groundbreaking health initiative called
WELL BE CHECK is changing how individuals engage with their health. Founded by Ryo Hanataka, who lost his mother to breast cancer nearly a decade ago, this innovative service aims to empower people by enabling them to recognize early signs of health issues before they escalate into serious diseases. The inspiration came from Hanataka's regrettable experience of not noticing the subtle changes in his mother’s health earlier. With this motivation, he sought to create a platform that allows anyone to understand their health better.
Recognition at Bizcon Nakano 2025
Recently, WELL BE CHECK received the
Grand Prize and the
SDGs Award at the
Bizcon Nakano 2025 business contest, held in collaboration with Seibu Shinkin Bank. Well over a hundred projects competed, making this dual recognition a significant achievement. The contest evaluates business models that tackle community and societal problems, assessing growth potential, social impact, and feasibility—qualities that WELL BE CHECK personifies.
Bizcon Nakano, which is dedicated to encouraging solutions for pressing societal issues, selected WELL BE CHECK not just for its innovation, but for its capacity to integrate health data into various aspects of healthcare including medicine, nutrition, fitness, and community healthcare initiatives.
Addressing Health Apathy with Accessible Solutions
WELL BE CHECK operates through
LINE, a messaging platform, allowing users to take a quick health assessment consisting of 50 subjective questions that quantify their
pre-disease state. The service takes about five minutes, providing a user-friendly and convenient way for individuals—especially those who are currently indifferent about their health—to engage in self-assessment. It recognizes the challenge in promoting health awareness; if individuals can’t see or understand their health status, they often remain inactive concerning their well-being. Through this innovative approach, WELL BE CHECK visualizes otherwise invisible health issues, creating an impetus for action among those who previously neglected their health.
A Platform for Change
Unlike conventional health check services, WELL BE CHECK aspires to be a comprehensive platform addressing the serious implications of pre-disease states. The system allows not merely for health checks but actively fosters a culture of proactive behavior regarding personal health. By accumulating data on pre-disease conditions, the initiative envisions creating a
big data bank that can revolutionize healthcare solutions globally. This concept was pivotal in securing the
SDGs Award, recognizing its potential contribution to a more sustainable society.
A Vision Beyond Personal Loss
In his acceptance speech, Ryo Hanataka shared profound emotions rooted in his experience with his mother’s illness. He recalled the helplessness felt on the day of her diagnosis, the hospital's unfamiliar smells, her worried expression, and the long-lasting feelings of regret for not acting sooner. His drive stems from a determination to prevent others from facing similar heartbreak. He believes that everyone receives subtle signals about their health and that with the right tools, these indications can be recognized early on.
This conviction is at the core of WELL BE CHECK. Hanataka expresses a wish that, had there been tools available during his mother's health struggles, perhaps they could have detected the disease earlier. Now, he channels this desire into efforts to enhance WELL BE CHECK, inviting more people to utilize the service and actively take charge of their own health.
Future Directions and Collaboration
Looking ahead, WELL BE CHECK aims to increase its user base significantly and evolve its pre-disease data into a robust industry asset. By collaborating with various sectors including healthcare, nutrition, fitness, and local governments, the initiative aspires to redefine the approach to health management, shifting the focus to prevention and early detection.
Hanataka’s passion underscores the staggering number of lives that could be saved with increased health awareness. He hopes to reduce the instances of families experiencing similar regrets of lost opportunities. In fostering a community that prioritizes health awareness, he envisions transforming the landscape of health management for future generations.
