PLATEAU CityHack Challenge 2026: Tackling Local Challenges through Innovation
As cities around the world confront numerous local challenges, the
PLATEAU CityHack Challenge 2026 aims to offer an innovative approach through the use of 3D city models. Hosted by the KADOKAWA ASCII Research Institute and backed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, this free event invites a diverse group of participants to come together and create solutions for their communities.
What is the PLATEAU CityHack Challenge?
The PLATEAU CityHack Challenge, set to take place from
August 22 to September 5, 2026, encourages collaboration between participants and local government officials. Over the course of this hackathon, participants will examine specific local government-provided challenges, brainstorm, and develop prototypes leveraging 3D city models and their own unique skills. This year marks the second installment of the event, which promises to build on the successes and insights gained from the inaugural challenge.
This initiative specifically seeks those interested in the integration of technology in urban development, including engineers, designers, planners, students, researchers, local government employees, and private sector businesses. With a shared goal of utilizing technology to tackle local issues, participants will explore how 3D models can lead to more efficient solutions.
Event Features
1. Problem-Solving Focused on Local Government Issues
Participants will work on real-world challenges faced by municipalities, including disasters prevention, transportation, tourism, and urban development. By addressing these specific issues, the event will cultivate practical ideas and create pathways for implementation, ensuring that participants are directly aligned with the needs of their communities.
2. Prototyping with 3D City Models
Using the 3D models contributed by
Project PLATEAU, teams will prototype applications, services, and visualization tools aimed at creatively addressing local challenges. This hands-on experience will allow participants to interact with urban data, developing actionable insights and innovative solutions tailored to specific local contexts.
3. Collaboration Among Diverse Participants
A key aspect of the challenge is collaboration. The event will bring together stakeholders from municipal staff to private enterprises, including engineers, designers, planners, students, and researchers. By pooling expertise and ideas from various fields, the event hopes to foster a culture of cooperation and creativity in problem-solving.
4. Connecting with the PLATEAU Community
Participants will have the opportunity to network with other developers, government entities, and industry experts involved in Project PLATEAU. This creates potential for ongoing collaborations beyond the hackathon, linking participants with future opportunities in the realm of urban development and technological innovation.
About Project PLATEAU
Project PLATEAU is a forward-thinking initiative by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, aiming to realize digital twin representations of cities across Japan. The project creates a foundational database using 3D city models to develop various use cases, which promotes DX (Digital Transformation) in urban development and drives open innovation.
The Role of KADOKAWA ASCII Research Institute
Since its inception in 2020, the KADOKAWA ASCII Research Institute has played a crucial role in promoting the utilization of 3D urban models in conjunction with Project PLATEAU. Through their digital media outlet, ASCII STARTUP, the institute has been an advocate for community building and information dissemination concerning urban spatial technology. The institute aims to leverage its expertise in facilitating the hackathon to support collaboration among local governments, enterprises, and developers.
