Huawei and Partners Honored with GSMA Global Mobile Award
Huawei, along with its partners, has recently been awarded the Global Mobile (GLOMO) LATAM Award for Social Impact in Latin America, recognizing the impressive efforts put forward in its Tech4Nature project. The award was presented during the M360 LATAM 2026 event, which took place in Mexico City, honoring initiatives that drive positive social and ecological changes across the region.
The Tech4Nature project focuses on the Dzilam de Bravo Nature Reserve located in the stunning Yucatán Peninsula. This initiative exemplifies the power of technology in safeguarding the natural habitats of jaguars, an iconic yet threatened species. Under the umbrella of a global partnership between Huawei and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the project employs cutting-edge tools to monitor and protect the jaguar population and their environment.
As technology becomes more integral in various sectors, the implications for conservation efforts have grown profoundly. As stated by Samira Herrera, Director of Communications and Public Relations at Huawei Mexico, "This recognition reflects the power of technology when it is leveraged for the benefit of humanity and the planet." The Tech4Nature initiative embodies a remarkable collaboration among multiple sectors, resulting in tangible benefits for biodiversity and community development.
Launched in 2022 and currently in its second phase, this groundbreaking project has brought together various stakeholders, including the IUCN, Huawei, the state government of Yucatán, C Minds, the Universidad Politécnica de Yucatán (UPY), and the local community of Dzilam de Bravo. The essence of Tech4Nature revolves around community-led leadership integrated with AI-driven species detection and individual animal identification to ensure effective monitoring and management while encouraging participation from diverse community sectors.
Regina Cervera, Project Coordinator for Tech4Nature Mexico at AI for Climate from C Minds, emphasizes the vital role of collaborative action in amplifying conservation outcomes: “Tech4Nature Mexico shows that the true potential of technology lies in transforming data into coordination, collective action, and government policies that protect nature.”
Since the inception of the project, 26 camera traps and 60 acoustic devices have been deployed in the reserve, leading to the identification of over 147 species, including 40 that are currently endangered. Critical observations include the identification of sixteen individual jaguars, vital for understanding their behavioral patterns and migration, which assists in formulating necessary protection measures for these essential species that help maintain ecological balance.
Huawei’s cloud-based solutions have played an immense role in processing and analyzing field data. Besides the video footage of jaguars, the system has captured and analyzed over one hundred thousand images and six hundred thousand audio recordings. This analysis significantly enhances the monitoring of local wildlife and the ecosystems that support them. The resultant insights facilitate a deeper understanding of the ecosystem, enabling informed and efficient decision-making towards biodiversity conservation that can even influence government policy.
Moreover, the project's ecological impact is evident, as the protected area has expanded from 69,000 to 104,000 hectares. The integration of technologies such as AI, cloud storage, and data analytics has set Tech4Nature Mexico on a path to develop a sustainable scientific conservation model that merges innovative scientific approaches with community engagement.
The wireless connectivity solutions provided by Huawei are also a core element of the environmental data transmission process, emphasizing collaboration emphasized at M360 LATAM 2026. This event brought together regional and global leaders across the technology landscape to explore leveraging technology’s potential for a more inclusive future.
In conclusion, the GLOMO LATAM Award highlights the innovative nature of the Tech4Nature project and its remarkable capability to generate significant social and ecological benefits for Latin America. With this initiative, Huawei reaffirms its commitment to utilizing technology as a tool for building a sustainable and inclusive future through projects that foster environmental protection and community development.
