Folk Arts in Toshima 2026: A Celebration of Tradition

On October 24, 2026, the Ikebukuro West Exit Park's Global Ring Theater will come alive with the sounds and sights of tradition as it hosts "Folk Arts in Toshima 2026: Clap our Roots, Stomp the Ground." This event, organized by the Toshima Future Cultural Foundation, aims to preserve and showcase the intangible cultural heritage of the Toshima area and beyond.

Since its inception in 1989, this annual festival has provided a platform for sharing and celebrating the rich tapestry of folk arts. It allows audiences of all ages to experience the vibrancy of local culture in an accessible outdoor setting.

This Year’s Theme: Earth

The central theme for this year's event is "Earth." This concept embodies the very essence of cultural connection—how we are rooted in the ground, how we resonate with our environment, and how we express our prayers through artistic gestures. Following the previous themes of "Fire" and "Water," the focus on "Earth" invites performances that physically express strength and resilience, such as the vibrant Nagasaki Lion Dance and the dramatic representation of the Great Serpent in traditional Kagura.

Highlights of the Event

Attendees can look forward to three main highlights:

1. Authentic Performances of Intangible Cultural Heritage
Expect captivating performances of Toshima’s pride—featuring the Nagasaki Lion Dance and Fujiwara Music group, among others. The event will also showcase traditional rituals including the Zoshigaya Kijimakyo Mando Ceremony, uniting folk art groups from exchange cities.

2. Special Live Performances Evolving Traditional Music
Talented artists will take the stage to creatively evolve Japanese traditional music and folk songs, bridging the gap between the past and present. Experience powerful live performances that blend historical traditions with modern sensibilities.

3. Interactive Workshops and Local Product Booths
Join hands-on workshops where audience members can experience the Nagasaki Lion Dance directly. Additionally, local vendors will set up booths, including the Tokiwa-sō Manga Museum, and represent products from Saitama's Chichibu and Niigata's Sado Island.
