Celebrating African Creativity at the TAIDO African Animation Awards 2026
The TAIDO Project, initiated by Arc & Beyond, is a significant step towards empowering the African animation industry through local storytelling. The project aims to elevate African narratives by collaborating with animation studios and talents in Ghana and Nigeria. On March 4, 2026, the culmination of this initiative will be showcased at the TAIDO African Animation Awards held at Glass Rock in Toranomon Hills, Tokyo.
Journey Towards Animation Excellence
Since its launch in October 2025, the TAIDO African Animation Challenge has gathered creative minds from two renowned studios—Animax FYB Studios in Ghana and CR Motion Plus Ltd in Nigeria. The program has included a rigorous mentorship process led by Japanese animation experts, which has been instrumental in the production of short films by participating studios.
Key figures have been immensely involved in this mentorship journey. Emiko Okawa, a freelance animation producer, has regularly conducted online meetings with the studios to share progress and insights. Alongside her, Koji Yano, a professor at Kyoto Seika University, and Kenichi Watanabe, a visiting professor, have provided character design lectures and crucial feedback during key stages of animation production.
Funding Success through Community Support
To support the awards ceremony, a crowdfunding campaign was launched, successfully raising 862,000 yen, albeit falling short of the 1,000,000 yen target. This funding has been vital, covering various costs associated with organizing the award ceremony, showcasing the community's commitment to fostering African animation.
