Business Insights from CELLORB's Esports Industry Report 2026
On a mission to 'Connect the World through Play', CELLORB has unveiled its latest document titled 'Esports Industry Business Report 2026'. This comprehensive report analyzes the business dynamics and consumer behavior pertaining to the esports industry in Japan.
The report, available for free download
here, aims to contribute to the sustainable development of the esports sector amid a landscape characterized by a heavy reliance on sponsorship revenues. With existing data lacking, many companies face challenges in making informed investment decisions. Thus, the report's authors emphasize the need for a more in-depth understanding of fan dynamics, aiming to harmonize the enthusiasm of fans with the profitability of businesses.
Cellorb's initiative stems from a successful experience in their past roles, where freely sharing market data and analyses stimulated market activity and fostered investment opportunities. It is hoped that this report will enhance awareness of the esports industry and promote a vibrant flow of capital and opportunities.
Key Highlights of the Report
Viewing Beyond the Screen
A standout finding from the survey of 20,000 individuals aged 15 to 69 is that over half of those who have watched esports have also spent money on related activities. The report outlines that within the context of 34 popular esports titles, approximately 66.7% of respondents are aware of these games, with 26.5% having viewed gameplay videos on platforms like YouTube. Notably, around 7.0% have engaged with esports events or pro-team content.
The report underscores significant differences in spending behavior depending on whether respondents support specific teams or players. For those without a team to cheer for, only 13.3% spent money on tickets or subscriptions, compared to 74.0% of fans who actively support both a player and a team, with spending averaging a staggering 37,698 yen versus just 1,614 yen for non-supporters. This highlights the critical role of building a connection with teams and players to boost engagement and financial contributions.
Current Trends in Esports
The report also reveals that younger audiences have a higher awareness and engagement rate with esports, while spending tends to cluster among a small subset of passionate fans. Further analysis indicates that the more a fan spends on a team, the greater their awareness of sponsors.
This data serves as a guiding beacon for companies considering entering or sponsoring in the esports arena, shedding light on the types of fans to target and the approaches to adopt.
