Rising Anxiety About Climate Change in Japan: A 2025 Survey Insight

Rising Anxiety About Climate Change in Japan

In a recent survey conducted by Cross Marketing, over three-quarters of Japanese participants expressed feelings of anxiety regarding climate change. This study, which surveyed 2,400 individuals aged 20 to 79, was conducted in September 2025 and indicates a slight increase in climate-related worries compared to previous years.

Survey Findings

The results show that 32% of participants feel "very anxious" about the current state of climate change, with an additional 45% stating they have some anxiety, making the total amounting to 77%. This is a small rise in concern when compared to 2023 and 2024.

Concerns Over Food Security

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Japan has reported that the country's food self-sufficiency rate remains low at 38%, the worst among developed nations for three consecutive years. The survey indicated that 43% of respondents feel "very anxious" and 38% "somewhat anxious" about Japan's food security, summing to an alarming 81%. Furthermore, the onset of the rice crisis in August 2024 has resulted in a 7-point increase in anxiety regarding food self-sufficiency.

Specific Anxiety Items

Among those surveyed, concerns about climate change leading to natural disasters and personal health impacts were prominent. 63% of respondents indicated fears about an increase in heavy rains and downpours, while 58% are worried about decreased quality and failure of agricultural products. Half of the participants expressed fears about suffering from heat-related illnesses, a marker that has grown in worry by six points since last year, now ranking second in anxiety items.

Concerns extend to environmental and ecosystem impacts as well, with 56% fearing the loss of Japan's four distinct seasons, 40% concerned about changing habitats for marine life, and 32% anxious about deteriorating water quality and decreasing water resources. Compared to the previous year, anxiety about the shifting seasons has risen by eight points.
