Capture Your Cool: Tokyo's Summer Heat Prevention Contest

Tokyo's Appeal to Combat Extreme Heat

As climate change continues to elevate the risks of heat-related illnesses, Tokyo is spearheading an initiative to promote smart energy conservation and comfortable living through its "Tokyo Cool Biz" campaign. This effort focuses on enhancing working, living, and stylish environments, targeting the sweltering heat impact stemming from ongoing energy uncertainties.

In a bid to protect life and health from extreme temperatures, the Tokyo government has launched a photo campaign, inviting residents to showcase their innovative heat prevention tools. This engaging endeavor encourages community involvement, allowing individuals to share creative approaches they are taking to beat the heat.

What’s the Contest About?

Participants are asked to submit photographs along with comments showcasing how they are utilizing heat prevention products. The contest is divided into three distinct categories:

1. Cool Work Environment: Examples include heat checkers, clothing with built-in fans, etc.
2. Cool Living Environment: Examples include innovative air conditioning setups, reusable water bottles, and oral rehydration solutions.
3. Cool Fashion Environment: Examples include umbrellas, hats, neck coolers, and cooling vests.

The submission period stretches from June 26 to August 31, 2023. This open call encourages all individuals residing, attending school, or working in the Tokyo area to participate.

What’s at Stake?

As a reward for their efforts, 100 participants will be randomly selected to receive Tokyo Points (100 points each), which can be used for various services and goods throughout the city. This initiative not only aims to inspire individual creativity but also fosters a spirit of community outreach and awareness regarding heat safety.

A Successful Start to Heat Safety

This contest builds on the success of Tokyo's first "Heat Prevention Goods Contest," where top products, including heat checkers and apps for shaded routes, were recognized through public voting. Recently held awards featured engaging discussions between the governor and guests on the significance of heat prevention products. To catch a glimpse of the event, check out the highlights here.
