Consumers Energy Commits $5 Million to Community Support
In response to severe winter weather last month, Consumers Energy has announced its commitment of $5 million to assist at-risk households in Michigan with their heating costs. This initiative is aimed at helping families who are facing financial hardship due to the unexpected cold spell.
Brandon Hofmeister, Consumers Energy's senior vice president for strategy, sustainability, and external affairs, expressed the company’s eagerness to support customers during the winter season. He emphasized, “We want our customers who are concerned with making ends meet to know dollars will be available that can make a difference.” This declaration highlights the company’s commitment to not just providing energy, but also to ensuring its customers maintain their warmth and quality of life despite difficult financial circumstances.
Consumers Energy's contributions will be dispersed via five selected nonprofit organizations that play a vital role in community support. These organizations include:
- - TrueNorth Community Services
- - United Way of South Central Michigan
- - The Salvation Army
- - St. Vincent de Paul Society
- - Michigan Veterans Trust Fund
Families in need of assistance are encouraged to reach out through the 2-1-1 helpline, a free service designed to connect Michiganders with local supports, from energy bill assistance to food and shelter needs. Consumers Energy customers who have concerns regarding their heating bills can also reach them directly at 800-477-5050.
Chris Sargent, president of the United Way of South Central Michigan, noted the timely nature of this support: “Barely halfway through a tough winter, families who struggle financially are finding it hard to keep up with essentials like heating costs. This support gives them hope and a warm home.” Such partnerships not only empower these organizations but also strengthen the community's resilience during trying times.
Last year, Consumers Energy assisted over 137,000 individuals with energy-related expenses, helping to secure nearly $69 million from various sources. The company remains dedicated to ensuring energy access, especially during winter when the demand for heating surges significantly.
Hofmeister reassured the public, stating, “When it’s cold outside, our customers can count on us for reliable energy and a helping hand when they need it.” This financial commitment is not merely a corporate gesture but a lifeline to thousands of households struggling amidst rising living costs and economic uncertainty.
Additionally, Consumers Energy is urging its customers to apply for the Michigan Home Heating Credit, an essential resource available for low-income individuals. Eligible homeowners and renters can seek this credit to alleviate their energy expenditures for the 2024 tax year, provided their income is at or below 110% of the federal poverty level. More information can be found on the Michigan Home Heating Credit Information website.
As Michigan's largest energy provider, Consumers Energy services about 6.8 million residents across 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Their commitment to delivering reliable, clean, and affordable energy is more crucial than ever, especially in the depths of winter.
