Creating Rice Burgers: A Culinary Journey with Local Ingredients

A Delicious Family Affair: Making Rice Burgers Together

This summer, PalSystem Tokyo is inviting families to a hands-on cooking event where they will learn to make rice burgers from scratch. Set to take place on August 26 at Bunkyo's Academy Mukoga, this workshop aims to engage approximately 30 families in a fun and educational experience centered on local ingredients.

The event will be led by trained food education leaders from PalSystem, who have completed a special course to teach families about the importance of nutrition and sustainable food practices. Attendees will gain insight into the journey of rice, from its cultivation at local farms through the PalSystem's direct sourcing program, to its transformation into delicious burgers that can be enjoyed together.

Emphasizing the Importance of Traditional Diets

The rice burger workshop is part of a broader initiative to promote the Japanese diet, which emphasizes rice as a staple. By guiding participants through the recipe, the food education leaders will share valuable knowledge about the cultural significance of rice and its role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This event not only teaches cooking skills but also instills vital life lessons about sustainability and food sourcing.

Participants will have the opportunity to prepare various dishes alongside the rice burger, including a unique “sweet red bean milk drink” made with locally sourced beans and Hokkaido's Concen 72 milk, as well as salted cucumber and miso soup, showcasing the versatility of Japanese cuisine. The use of local ingredients in these dishes emphasizes the importance of supporting local agriculture and encourages families to incorporate fresh, seasonal produce into their diets.

Notably, this workshop is part of the “Onigiri Good” campaign launched in April 2026, aimed at enhancing rice consumption in Japan. By encouraging families to make and enjoy onigiri, a traditional rice ball, the campaign fosters a deeper connection with domestic agriculture. Each participant’s involvement counts toward achieving the goal of 10,000 actions, with the promise of donating one ton of rice to children's dining rooms in 12 prefectures once that milestone is reached.

In just a few months, the initiative has already surpassing this target, kicking off the donation process to various organizations by the end of July.

A Sense of Community Through Food

At the heart of this event lies the spirit of community and joy. As families come together to create their own rice burgers, they’ll share laughter, learn about food sourcing, and form connections through this shared experience. Each bite of their handcrafted meal symbolizes not just a culinary delight, but also a commitment to promoting local resources and contributing to social welfare.

As PalSystem Tokyo continues to support domestic agriculture through its consumer initiatives, they encourage all participants to embrace sustainable practices and instill a sense of responsibility towards food consumption among the younger generation. With a firm belief in the power of food in building community ties, PalSystem Tokyo is paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for both consumers and producers alike.
