Bringing California's Natural Wine Culture to Japan
Newport Beach is set to see a cultural transformation as
Poppy Wine, an innovative project, embarks on a mission to share the essence of California's natural wine culture with Japan. Scheduled to open on August 14, 2026, the wine shop and bar will be located in Setagaya's Shimokitazawa district, rightly known for its vibrant culture.
This intriguing venture, initiated by
OCI LLC, partners with
Kyle and
Becca, who are the proprietors of
Semi Tropic Wines in Costa Mesa, California. Their mission with Poppy Wine is not merely to sell wine, but to narrate the rich stories behind each bottle, reflective of the land's culture, environment, and the philosophies of its creators. By focusing on small-scale, genuine wine producers, they aim to encapsulate the unique characteristics of each region.
The Mission of Poppy Wine
At the heart of Poppy Wine's initiative is a commitment to
storytelling. The project aspires to illuminate the narratives that accompany natural wines from California, connecting Japan to the vineyards, the caring hands that cultivate them, and the cultural frameworks they represent. The wines chosen for this project are crafted by dedicated vintners who cultivate their grapes in small plots, fermenting in limited quantities that express the uniqueness of their environment.
Poppy Wine plans to preserve these stories through multimedia archives, including videos and photographs, delving into the journeys of the producers and creating case studies from visits to their wineries.
Background of Poppy Wine
The idea for Poppy Wine springs from the experiences of Kyle and Becca at their own establishment,
Semi Tropic Wines in Costa Mesa. Recognizing the scarcity of venues serving natural wine in Orange County, they sought to change this landscape. As a result, Semi Tropic Wines emerged as a pioneering wine bar specializing exclusively in natural wines.
Through the operation of their bar, they connected with wines from diverse regions including France, Italy, Eastern Europe, Australia, South America, and California. A keen observation pointed out a striking contrast: while natural wines from cities like Paris, Sydney, Los Angeles, New York, and Tokyo were readily available, California wines were virtually absent in Japan. This notable gap prompted the creation of Poppy Wine.
Poppy Wine's Philosophy on Natural Wine
Poppy Wine believes that natural wine serves as a bridge connecting the
past, present, and future. Historically, wine has been crafted using natural methods, but in more recent times, industrialized winemaking aimed at mass production has become prevalent. Natural wine acts as a
snapshot, reflecting the soil, climate, and year’s environment through minimal intervention.
The resultant wines are pure, distinctive, and expressive, allowing true character to shine through.
The Essence of California Natural Wine
Natural wines from California are shaped by the vast landscapes, diverse climates, and the creativity of their makers. Regions like
Sonoma,
Humboldt,
Sierra Foothills, and
Southern California contribute distinct personalities to their wines, influenced by variations in soil, climate, and grape varieties.
Sonoma, in particular, is becoming a focal point for low-intervention winemakers, boasting a climate influenced by the ocean and rich soils that nurture balanced grapes. While California wines often evoke images of robust and oaky styles, natural wines embrace a freer and more diverse expression.
According to Poppy Wine, the appeal of California natural wines lies in their
youthfulness,
freshness,
energy,
balance,
cleanliness, and
vibrant impressions.
