Stax Music Academy Marks 25 Years with Soul of America's Launch and Educational Initiatives
Celebrating 25 Years of Soul Music Empowerment at Stax Music Academy
Stax Music Academy (SMA), a prestigious institution dedicated to the legacy of soul music, proudly commemorates its 25th anniversary in 2025. This milestone celebrates the academy’s commitment to youth education and the rich heritage of soul music. As a highlight of this year-long celebration, SMA has unveiled its latest initiative, Soul of America, a virtual performance production designed to engage students, educators, and music enthusiasts alike.
A Journey Through Music and History
The Soul of America project serves not only as a performance but also as a powerful educational tool. It merges music with historical narratives and social change, providing a platform where students can explore their creativity and articulate their experiences. The accompanying study guide, tailored for educators and youth organizations, encourages deep engagement with the material and facilitates meaningful conversations about art, community, and cultural heritage.
Bria Saulsberry, the Director of Education and Youth Development at SMA, emphasized the importance of the program. “This year's program connects lived experiences through music while uplifting the ongoing legacy of American soul music,” she said. Saulsberry added that the ultimate goal is to empower students to create art that resonates with their lives and to foster a sense of community.
Student Perspectives and Creative Expression
The impact of SMA on its students is profound. For instance, Pasley Thompson, a senior, shared how the academy transformed her understanding of her capabilities. “One of the most important lessons SMA has taught me is balance – life, school, work – and that music is such a gamble,” she reflected. “I never thought I'd be a singer, but through SMA, I discovered my voice and the ability to write scripts that resonate with people.”
Broadening Their Reach
SMA's commitment to accessibility is reflected in its outreach efforts. Last year alone, over 150,000 viewers engaged with their productions, largely due to the dedication of educators nationwide. A notable partnership with Ryan Seacrest's foundation, which established Seacrest Studios in pediatric hospitals across the country, highlights the importance of music in healing. Chris Luther, the Lead at Seacrest Studios in Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, stated: “Our missions align to inspire and uplift children - to help them heal through the transformative power of music.”
Year-long Celebration and Future Initiatives
To honor its 25-year legacy, Stax Music Academy has planned a year of memorable events and performances. The centerpiece will be a live show slated for February 21st in downtown Memphis, along with a series of popup concerts that will celebrate the roots and evolution of soul music. Additionally, SMA students will take part in a national summer concert tour, including prominent cities like Washington, D.C., New York City, and Nashville, starting with a significant appearance at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
Upholding an Important Legacy
With its roots in the influential Stax Records, SMA continues to nurture future artists while paying homage to legendary figures like Isaac Hayes and Otis Redding. The academy is dedicated to providing rigorous music education for young individuals aged 12-18, ensuring that the essence of Memphis and its rich musical heritage remains vibrant.
For those interested in the Soul of America resources, the digital production and companion study guide will be available for download beginning February 3rd, 2025. These materials are intended for educators, youth organizations, and anyone interested in enriching their understanding of music's impact on society.
As SMA looks ahead, it continues to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation, proving that the soul of Memphis music will thrive through its students and their stories.
