Discovering Human Creativity Through Art
The Japan Science Future Museum, affectionately known as Miraikan, is set to unveil its latest exhibition titled
'Deviation Game—What Does it Mean to Express Uniquely as Humans?' on
December 24, 2025. This innovative exhibition aims to delve into the realms of human creativity through an interactive art project that engages participants in a unique drawing game involving AI.
Exhibition Overview
Located on the third floor of Miraikan's permanent exhibition zone, 'Future Creation', this interactive experience is crafted by renowned artist
Tomohiro Kibara and the art and design unit
Playfool. In this game, participants are tasked with creating images that AI cannot easily interpret or replicate. The challenge is clear: participants must draw in a way that humans can understand but AIs cannot. Their goal is to outsmart AI by creating artworks that deviate from prior online knowledge and portray something entirely unique.
How the Game Works
In this engaging format, players will create their artworks based on categories they select, including options like
'Food',
'Place', and an exciting new addition called
'Local Challenge Mode', which focuses on the exhibits at Miraikan itself. This offers a distinctive opportunity for participants to produce creative expressions rooted in their experiences within the museum, potentially leading to artwork that AI couldn’t predict.
Participants will present their artwork to others who will then guess what it represents. If AI correctly identifies the image based on its learned data, it wins; however, if humans succeed in outsmarting the AI, they emerge victorious. This intriguing foray sits at the intersection of technology and creativity and prompts deeper reflections on the unique capabilities that only humans possess.
Significance of the Exhibition
As AI continues to permeate society at an astonishing speed, the 'Deviation Game' serves as a platform for participants to ponder what it means to create as a human. It activates a discourse concerning the continuously evolving relationship between humans and AI. How should we engage with this powerful technology that is rapidly advancing? What aspects of creativity are irreplaceably human? This exhibition invites visitors to explore these fundamental questions and consider their implications for the future.
A Rich Legacy
The 'Deviation Game' is inspired by Alan Turing's
Imitation Game, a thought experiment aimed at understanding if AI can truly mimic human thought processes. However, in contrast, the
'Deviation Game' flips this relationship on its head by encouraging players to think outside the predefined parameters associated with AI learning. By exploring originality and creativity that lies beyond the reach of AI's vast learning datasets, participants can venture into a landscape of unprecedented creative expression.
Originally developed as part of the
Civic Creative Base Tokyo’s art incubation program in 2022, this project has since traveled globally, showcasing at esteemed festivals like
Ars Electronica and the
Taipei Digital Art Festival. The game is also being prepared for release on
Steam, expanding its reach to a worldwide audience eager to explore the next frontier of artistic engagement that combines human creativity and artificial intelligence.
