Recognizing the Impact of School Leaders on National Principals' Day

Honoring Leadership on National Principals' Day

Every year on May 1, we take a moment to celebrate the incredible contributions of school principals across the country. National Principals' Day is a significant occasion, and at National Heritage Academies® (NHA®), we take this day seriously. We recognize that effective school leaders are integral to establishing a thriving educational environment:

A Commitment to Educational Excellence

At NHA, we understand that our principals not only lead by example but also serve as cornerstones in nurturing student success. This commitment drives us to invest not just in our students, but also in the educators who play pivotal roles in their growth.

Jennifer Hoppesch, our Manager of Leadership Development, highlights that strengthening educator growth is paramount in our strategy. NHA ensures that every teacher is welcomed into an encouraging framework where they receive ongoing coaching, which includes weekly meetings with their designated dean—who plays a critical role in supporting instructional practices.

Elevating Future Leaders

In pursuit of excellence in leadership, NHA has developed innovative programs like the Dean Prep Academy for aspiring leaders and Principal Prep Academy aimed at equipping candidates with essential skills for effective school leadership.

The positive impact of these initiatives is evident, especially in North Carolina, where a remarkable statistic shows that out of 16 NHA schools, 13 are led by principals who began their careers within our network. This growth trajectory reflects our unwavering dedication to professional development.

As Hoppesch points out, “This statistic showcases our organization's investment in its personnel. NHA acknowledges the value of those who are committed to serving students and provides avenues for leaders to further develop their skills.”

Continuous Improvement is Key

NHA's commitment to nurturing its principals doesn’t stop at the Principal Prep Academy. First-year principals are enrolled in the New Principal Academy, designed to equip them for success in their inaugural year. Furthermore, these leaders are encouraged to consistently refine their skills through various comprehensive resources that NHA provides.

Brian Couch, the Director of School Leadership Development and Culture, emphasizes that the organization’s dedication to growth isn’t just talk; it’s a lived reality. "There are many who express this vision, but few encapsulate it in action as effectively as NHA does," shares Couch. This commitment not only retains talented leaders but also supports their continuous development, fostering a culture of excellence.

High Expectations, High Standards

For three decades, NHA has nurtured a culture that prioritizes high expectations. Our principals are unyielding in this pursuit, consistently advocating for the best interests of their students. According to Hoppesch, NHA principals create an atmosphere filled with respect and high standards for learning.

“Effective leaders establish cultures of excellence,” she adds. “Strong leadership cultivates an environment conducive to learning, ultimately benefitting our students immensely.”

Measurable Success for Students

The methodologies that NHA employs have yielded impressive academic results. Research from Stanford's Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) indicates that NHA students experience remarkable advancements in learning—69 additional days in math and 46 in reading when compared with peers from traditional schools.

At NHA, we are committed to laying a robust foundation for the success of our students, significantly enhanced by our investment in school leaders who motivate and inspire both staff and students alike. If you’re contemplating a teaching career with abundant growth opportunities, NHA provides the necessary support to help you evolve into a successful school leader.
