European Festivals Shine in the Inaugural Yanolja Festival Index 2026
The Yanolja Research Institute, renowned for its expertise in travel and tourism, launched the inaugural "Global Festival Attractiveness Index," often referred to as the Yanolja Festival Index, on June 8, 2026. This groundbreaking initiative aims to provide an objective assessment of the qualitative appeal of 560 major festivals worldwide, leveraging multilingual social media big data to quantify their attractiveness.
Insights into the Rankings
Developed in collaboration with Purdue University’s CHRIBA Institute in the USA and Kyung Hee University’s HT Analysis Center in Seoul, this innovative index utilized user-generated content (UGC) collected in 14 different languages via Brandwatch. The results revealed that while Coachella remained the world's number one festival, European festivals showcased remarkable competitiveness. Among them, the Spanish festival, Mad Cool, earned the title of the highest-ranked event in Europe, proudly standing in fourth place globally.
European festivals' captivating appeal lies in their unique, immersive experiences that resonate with global attendees. The report highlights the tremendous presence of Europe within the festival scene: Hungary's Sziget Festival ranked sixth, Italy’s Carnival of Venice claimed seventh, and Spain’s La Tomatina secured the eighth position. The UK's British Summer Time Festival and the Netherlands' Pinkpop Festival rounded out the global top ten, landing in ninth and tenth places respectively. Additionally, other strong performers included Germany's Oktoberfest (12th) and the Netherlands' Defqon.1 Festival (17th), evidencing Europe’s strength in delivering attractive entertainment, rich cultural authenticity, and unforgettable experiences for visitors worldwide.
Advanced Metrics for Festival Experiences
The Yanolja Festival Index focuses on two main components: 'Festival Attractiveness,' which captures visitors' emotional responses, and 'Festival Reputation,' which assesses visibility through conversation volume and linguistic diversity. These elements are synthesized into three evaluation dimensions: 1) Key Festival Content and Experiences, 2) Festival Atmosphere and Emotion, and 3) Operational Convenience and Infrastructure.
Dr. Soo Cheong Jang, a professor at Purdue University and the director of Yanolja Research, stated, "This index represents a data-driven effort to assess the quality of planned experiences based on attendees' digital footprints. The noteworthy success of European festivals demonstrates the global appeal of distinctive cultural experiences and highlights the importance of showcasing this unique value to international travelers."
In a bid to maintain its role as a vital industry resource, Yanolja Research plans to release the Yanolja Festival Index annually. Detailed rankings, category analyses, and regional results can be explored in full on the Yanolja Research official website. For more insights, visit
