Handcrafted Stop-Motion Film by Godawan Highlights India's Great Indian Bustard in the Age of AI

Godawan's Handcrafted Stop-Motion Film

In a world increasingly dominated by AI technology, Godawan, the Indian single malt whisky, has chosen a path marked by artistry and creativity through its recent stop-motion film. This film does more than promote a brand; it beautifully conveys the story of the Great Indian Bustard, a critically endangered bird that almost became India's national bird.

A Unique Approach to Filmmaking

Created by Diageo India, the Godawan film showcases over 5,200 hand-painted ceramic pieces. Artisans painstakingly crafted these pieces, resulting in a film that combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary storytelling. The entire production process spanned an impressive 15,000 hours, melding stop-motion animation with 2D elements and live-action segments, a nod to the intricacy of Jaipur Blue Pottery.

Directed by Studio Eeksaurus and conceptualized by 22feet and McCann India, the film features a folk score that highlights the cultural richness of Rajasthan. The collaboration brought together talents from various backgrounds, including Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty and Grammy-winning percussionist Taufiq Qureshi, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.

Championing Conservation

Since its launch in 2022, Godawan has played a crucial role in the conservation efforts of the Great Indian Bustard. Collaborating with organizations such as the Wildlife Institute of India, the Rajasthan Forest Department, and Gramodaya Samajik Sansthan, Godawan has helped increase the bustard population from fewer than 100 to over 198. These efforts underscore the brand's commitment to not only producing premium whisky but also contributing positively to the environment and local wildlife.

Ruchira Jaitly, Chief Marketing Officer of Diageo India, emphasizes the brand’s journey to raise awareness about the bustard's plight and connect people to its story. The film serves as a medium to celebrate this conservation journey while shining a light on Rajasthan's rich cultural heritage, cleverly intertwining the themes of conservation and craftsmanship.

The Slow Art Movement in Film

What makes this project stand out is its dedication to traditional craftsmanship in a time when digital creation is often the norm. Co-Founder and Director of Studio Eeksaurus, Suresh Eriyat, notes that the slow and meticulous nature of this production mirrors the patience required to protect endangered species. This slower pace allows for a deeper connection with the art form and the message it carries.

Rahul Mathew, Chief Creative Officer of McCann India, highlights the importance of community and collaboration in the conservation narrative. He points out that by using Jaipur Blue Pottery as the aesthetic medium, the project not only tells the story of the Godawan but also supports local artisans and their craft, encapsulating a holistic approach to storytelling.

A Lasting Impact

The Godawan project exemplifies the intersection of art, culture, and environmentalism. As viewers engage with this heartfelt narrative, they are invited to reflect not only on the beauty of the Great Indian Bustard but also on the critical importance of conservation efforts. It is a reminder that through collaboration, community engagement, and a profound appreciation for craftsmanship, brands can make a lasting impact while creating art that resonates deeply with audiences.

With its handcrafted film, Godawan invites everyone to become a part of the conservation narrative of India's Great Indian Bustard while celebrating the cultural heritage of Rajasthan in an innovative, engaging manner. The commitment to this cause is as strong as the spirit of the whisky itself, portraying a journey that values life, art, and conservation above all else.
