Orange County Workers Plan Strike Amid Contract Dispute, Service Disruptions Expected

Orange County Workers Prepare to Strike Over Contract Dispute

On October 8, 2026, Teamsters Local 952 announced that nearly 500 public sector workers from Orange County are gearing up for a strike. The action is slated to commence on Tuesday, October 13, should the county fail to reach a reasonable agreement regarding their contract.

The workers affected perform various essential services across multiple county departments, including OC Public Works, OC Waste and Recycling, and OC Community Resources. These departments are responsible for serving approximately three million residents.

Potential Impact of the Strike

A strike by these workers would likely lead to noticeable delays in several critical services. Among the operations affected would be road and flood channel maintenance, landfill and recycling processes, as well as park and beach upkeep. Additionally, essential repairs to county and emergency responder vehicles would be stalled.

Eric Jimenez, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 952, expressed frustrations over the county's handling of negotiations: "The county has shown that its priorities are not with the workers who keep Orange County running or the more than three million residents who depend on these services. We have extended every opportunity for the county to engage in good faith negotiations before the strike date. If they refuse to deliver a fair agreement that values our members, we are prepared to initiate the strike."

Wage Disparities and Staffing Issues

Longstanding wage disparities have made it increasingly challenging for the county to attract and maintain skilled workers. This has exacerbated existing staffing shortages and increased workloads for current employees.

"None of us wanted to reach this point," commented Travis Molina, a power equipment operator for OC Public Works. “We wish to be serving our communities, maintaining roads, and preparing for emergencies. Yet at the same time, we must be valued. We stand united, and we will persist until we secure a fair contract."

The frustration among workers is also heightened due to a perception of bad faith bargaining on the part of the county. Local 952 has lodged unfair labor practice charges citing the county's failure to fairly negotiate. Adding to the tension, the Orange County Board of Supervisors recently voted to increase supervisors' salaries by 25%, an action that many employees view as disconnected from their own struggles.

This potential strike underscores broader issues within labor dynamics, especially concerning essential public services. The Teamsters Local 952, representing around 9,500 workers in Orange County, emphasizes the need for equitable treatment of employees, spotlighting the disparity in compensation against their critical roles in maintaining quality services for residents.
