Exploring the Power of Chewing in Sports with Takashi Soeda
On March 15, 2026, a unique event titled "From Chewing Power to Sports Performance" marked its sixth installment at LOCOK Wellness Garden in Shinagawa, Tokyo. This initiative, co-organized by Lotte Corporation and LOCOK, gathered 12 elementary school students for an engaging tennis workshop and talk show, led by Takashi Soeda, the former professional tennis player and current head coach of Japan's men's tennis team, alongside guest professor Tomotaka Takeda from Tokyo Dental College.
The event kicked off with a quiz designed to educate the young participants about the importance of chewing. Students eagerly participated in this interactive session, learning about the effects of chewing on physical strength and various related research. Questions like, "What is the best gum to chew?" and "How long should I chew gum?" illustrated their growing curiosity about the connection between chewing and sports performance.
In the talk show, Soeda shared insights regarding how chewing can contribute to relaxation, which is essential for optimal sports performance. Takeda elaborated on how chewing activates the brain, leading to faster decision-making and explosive movements. Impressively, Soeda demonstrated a chewing strength comparable to that of a professional athlete, emphasizing the importance of balanced chewing on both sides.
Following the discussions, the participants moved to the tennis court, where they practiced serves and rallies while chewing gum under Soeda's guidance. He inspired the children by saying, "Overcoming tough training is key to becoming strong. Consistency is crucial, and I hope you incorporate what you've learned into your future practice."
Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed their intentions to pay more attention to their chewing habits, stating things like, "I want to start being mindful of chewing from now on," and "I was thrilled to learn from Soeda! I had so much fun practicing while chewing gum!" It was a significant opportunity for these young athletes to experience firsthand the powerful role of chewing in sports.
