Claros Technologies Demonstrates Exceptional PFAS Destruction
Claros Technologies, Inc., known for their innovative PFAS destruction technology, has unveiled remarkable results from a recent study that showcases their ClarosTechUV™ system's ability to achieve a destruction rate of ≥99.99% for key PFAS compounds in contaminated groundwater. This notable achievement came about during a project at a Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) site in Lake Elmo, where Claros was provided PFAS concentrate from the treatment of over one million gallons of contaminated water.
The water sourced was characterized by a complex mix of pollutants, especially in terms of PFOS and PFOA concentrations, representing a real-world scenario that remediation technologies often face. Claros utilized its ClarosTechUV™ system to manage this challenging environment, achieving significant destruction of hazardous contaminants within a commercial-scale application. The study findings highlight the performance of ClarosTechUV™ as adaptable and highly effective, capable of effectively processing even water with low transparency and significant turbidity.
Testing Under Real-World Conditions
During the study, the team operated in an actual remediation context rather than controlled laboratory conditions, which is often critical in accurately assessing technology performance. ClarosTechUV™ maintained its efficacy across a range of scales, demonstrating consistent results after treating various volumes derived from approximately 600,000 gallons of groundwater. This underscores Claros's commitment to scalable solutions in PFAS remediation, contributing to the treatment of over one million gallons of PFAS-impacted water across numerous applications.
Michelle Bellanca, CEO of Claros Technologies, remarked, "This pilot demonstrates that our technology is built for the realities of field conditions. It adapts whether dealing with relatively clean water or those highly laden with PFAS." Her comments emphasize how ClarosTechUV™ not only meets the demands of varying water quality but does so reliably, paving the way for large-scale PFAS destruction efforts.
Energy Efficiency and Cost-effectiveness
The pilot initiatives further elucidated strong energy efficiency and cost performance metrics. With a destruction efficiency of ≥99.99% in just four hours of operation, the system consumed less than 200 Wh/L, translating to an operating cost of roughly $0.015 per 1,000 gallons of untreated groundwater. This level of cost efficiency significantly incentivizes remediation authorities to pursue permanent solutions to PFAS rather than merely managing their presence.
John Brockgreitens, Co-Founder and VP of Product Development at Claros Technologies, reinforced the significance of this pilot study, stating, "This study highlights the ability of ClarosTechUV™ to scale and integrate with various processes efficiently. Treatments can be performed even on complicated water matrices, thus broadening its application potential in the field of PFAS remediation."
Moving Forward with PFAS Solutions
Founded in 2018, Claros Technologies has quickly risen to a position of leadership in PFAS mitigation. Its core divisions focus on permanent destruction and analytical assessment of PFAS, providing robust systems that are both affordable and field-ready. The company seeks to eliminate PFAS from our environment permanently and continues to strive towards innovative solutions that address one of our most pressing pollutant challenges today.
With its technology, Claros is not just managing hazardous substances but is on a mission to eradicate them. For more information about Claros Technologies, visit their website at
