Viking Line's Commitment to Biogas
Viking Line is taking significant strides into 2026 by enhancing its travel and transportation services that maximize the use of renewable biogas originating from Europe. Building on the success of the previous year, where the company dramatically increased its biofuel usage tenfold, Viking Line is set on maintaining this ambitious trajectory for another year.
The vessels in focus,
Viking Glory and
Viking Grace, primarily operate the Turku-Stockholm route, leveraging both liquid natural gas and biogas to minimize their environmental footprint. This innovative fuel mix ensures remarkably low emissions of sulfur and particulates, marking an important step towards greener maritime operations.
According to
Dani Lindberg, the Head of Sustainability at Viking Line, “In the prior year, our greenhouse gas emissions from Glory and Grace declined by nearly
50,000 tonnes. For the initial half of 2026, we have successfully secured
50% biogas to meet our fuel requirements, aiming to sustain this high level across the entire year.” This commitment allows both passengers and freight customers using Viking Line’s services to play a direct role in reducing emissions within the Baltic Sea, subsequently encouraging further investments in sustainable shipping practices.
Viking Line has additionally established a green shipping corridor connecting Turku and Stockholm in partnership with
Ports of Stockholm and the
Port of Turku. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to achieve absolute fossil fuel elimination by the year 2035.
“While there are various international initiatives aimed at crafting fossil-free maritime lanes, many remain in the conceptual phase. Our dedication to biogas and the deployment of energy-efficient vessels is one of the most concrete examples of how the shipping industry can facilitate this transition,” says
Marcus Risberg, CEO of Viking Line.
Viking Line's ongoing investment in renewable energy not only underscores its commitment to sustainable practices but also positions the company as a leading figure in the regional transportation sector. By adopting biogas, Viking Line exemplifies how maritime travel can evolve towards more environmentally friendly solutions, thus benefiting the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea and beyond.
In summary, Viking Line’s ambitious plans hinge on the successful utilization of renewable biogas, setting a precedent for other shipping companies within the industry. The move represents a pivotal moment in transitioning to greener alternatives, helping pave the way for a sustainable future in maritime transport.
