New Community Club 'Hikage DE Frescobol Okinawa' Launched in Japan

New Horizons for Frescobol in Okinawa

The Japan Frescobol Association (JFBA), which promotes the unique sport of Frescobol in the country, has announced the establishment of a new certified community club, 'Hikage DE Frescobol Okinawa' (FSOK). This club is set to become the 29th certified community club under JFBA, further expanding the reach of this engaging beach sport throughout Japan.

Okinawa, known for its warm climate and stunning natural beaches, is a prime location for the sport. As JFBA's office is also located here, the region's unique characteristics make it a focal point for promoting Frescobol. In a nation that hosts diverse clubs, FSOK brings a unique concept to the table, emphasizing the idea of 'Hikage' or shade, which reflects the local culture.

The Roots of FSOK

The founder of FSOK, Isaku Kodera, has firsthand experience with Frescobol from its birthplace in Rio de Janeiro. After falling in love with the sport during his time in Brazil, he began promoting it in Okinawa in June 2022. Reflecting on his mission, Kodera remarked, “In Okinawa, beaches are often spaces for chatting in the shade or having BBQs rather than a place for vigorous exercise under the hot sun. Due to the local tendency to avoid sunburn, we have selected shaded areas for our activities.”

The club has cleverly adjusted to its surroundings, primarily holding activities in locations like the Miyagi Community Center in Urasoe City and beneath the elevated structure at Naminoue Beach in Naha City. This adaptation allows the club to maintain a comfortable environment for participants, which is crucial considering Okinawa's intense sunlight.

A Bright Future Ahead

In February, multiple athletes confirmed their participation in the upcoming 'Frescobol Okinawa Cup 2026', a decision that paved the way for FSOK’s certification as a community club. This milestone represents a new chapter for Frescobol in Okinawa, as it breaks barriers typically associated with beach sports, such as heat and sun exposure. The concept of 'Hikage' is not just a clever workaround; it has the potential to attract many new players to the sport, providing an innovative approach to enjoying Frescobol.

Frescobol is about easily enjoying the sport anytime, anywhere, with anyone. With the introduction of FSOK, there is an exciting shift that may introduce a refreshing breeze of change to the landscape of Frescobol in Japan.

What is Frescobol?

Frescobol originated in Rio de Janeiro and is now enjoyed around the world. Invented in 1945 at Copacabana Beach, its main characteristic is that it is a non-competitive sport where two players collaborate to keep a rally going rather than compete against each other. The game lasts for five minutes and takes place over a distance of 7 meters. This sport is often referred to as an 'empathetic sport' due to the cooperative nature of play.

In support of unifying international rules, JFBA is working towards establishing the first international organization, 'UAFI,' in partnership with the Rio Frescobol Federation (FEFERJ), with a basic agreement expected by October 2025. In Japan, the JFBA oversees 29 certified community clubs and six certified student organizations, all dedicated to the growth and enjoyment of Frescobol.
