Charles R. Kerns: A Legacy of Service and Safety



Charles R. Kerns has been recently recognized by The Inner Circle as a Pinnacle Professional Member. This acknowledgment highlights his substantial contributions to the fields of safety consulting and public service, cementing his reputation as a leader in community dedication and governance.

After a commendable career spanning several decades, Kerns is now enjoying his retirement while still holding a significant presence in the realm of public service. He previously served as the vice chairman of the Blumfield Township Planning Commission in Saginaw County, where he played a pivotal role in shaping essential policies regarding local infrastructure and safety. His ongoing influence in these areas reflects a lifelong commitment to making his community safer and more efficient.

In addition to his tenure with the Planning Commission, Kerns held several vital leadership roles. He was the executive board chairman of the Saginaw County 911 Communications Authority, where he managed critical communication services for emergencies across the region. He also lent his expertise as a consultant for the Tri-County Contractors Association, further demonstrating his dedication to enhancing work conditions and safety protocols within the industry.

Kerns' extensive experience is also marked by roles at Kerns Safety Consulting LLC and various positions involving Saginaw County governance. Notably, he served on the Saginaw County Road Commission, provided insights to the Blumfield Township Board of Review, and spent a decade as the supervisor for Blumfield Township. Each role has equipped him with knowledge that directly impacted the safety and well-being of his community.

One significant aspect of Kerns’ life is his service in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969, where he developed a strong foundation in leadership and commitment to service. Alongside his military background, he has earned numerous certifications related to safety and emergency response, including certifications as a medical first responder and ambulance attendant from the Michigan Department of Public Health.

His qualifications extend further to include arson and fire investigation, firefighting, and hazardous materials operations, all of which have been acquired through esteemed institutions such as the Michigan State Police and Fire Fighter Training Council. Kerns' dedication culminated in his retirement as a lieutenant from the Reese–Blumfield Township Fire Department, where he was not only a valued member but also an inspiring leader.

Affiliated with various public safety organizations, Kerns has maintained his active involvement in the community. He is associated with the Tuscola County and Saginaw County Fire Associations and is a member of the Saginaw County Township Officers Association, ensuring that his wealth of experience is shared with other safety professionals.

With over 16 years dedicated to safety consulting and over three decades of leadership, Charles R. Kerns has made an indelible mark on both his profession and his community. As he embraces retirement, he looks forward to spending quality time with his wife, Carolyn, whom he has been happily married to for 56 years. Even in retirement, Kerns remains engaged with safety initiatives and public service activities, inspiring new generations to follow in his footsteps. His enduring legacy serves as a benchmark for those aiming to promote safety and community welfare.
