The Home Depot Foundation's $30 Million Investment for Veteran Housing Access and Security

On November 10, 2025, as part of its ongoing commitment to serve veterans, The Home Depot Foundation announced a significant investment of over $30 million in new grants aimed at ensuring that thousands of veterans have access to secure and safe housing. This initiative comes just before Veterans Day, highlighting The Home Depot Foundation's dedication to improving the lives of those who have served in the military. With these new funds, the foundation moves closer to its ambitious goal of investing $750 million in veteran-related causes by the year 2030.

Despite progress in reducing veteran homelessness by more than 55% since 2010, there remains an alarming situation where nearly 33,000 veterans across the United States sleep without a safe roof over their heads each night. Furthermore, over 2.75 million veterans live in inadequate housing. As the gap between housing supply and demand widens and rental costs continue to rise, innovative solutions and collaborative efforts become crucial in ensuring that veterans receive housing suited to their needs.

Erin Izen, Executive Director of The Home Depot Foundation, emphasized the urgency of the situation by stating, "Veterans are often the last to ask for help and the first to lend a hand to others in need. It’s disheartening that so many are still homeless or live in homes needing urgent repairs." The foundation has prioritized housing for veterans since 2011, and this new investment underscores its commitment to providing veterans with the necessary housing they need to thrive.

The new wave of grants supports a national network of nonprofit partners that aim to tackle both immediate housing needs and long-term solutions for veterans. This includes:

1. Smart Homes for Severely Injured Veterans: The Foundation collaborates with various nonprofits to construct smart homes specifically tailored for veterans who have sustained catastrophic injuries in combat. These homes are customized to meet individual needs, accommodating those who may have suffered traumatic brain injuries or undergone amputations. Grants will support organizations like the Gary Sinise Foundation and Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warriors in their efforts to build accessible and personalized homes.

2. Essential Home Repairs for Seniors and Low-Income Veterans: With about half of all veterans aged 65 or older, many face disabilities or live on fixed incomes. Nonprofit organizations like Meals on Wheels America and Habitat for Humanity International focus on providing essential home repairs for older, disabled, and low-income veterans, ensuring they can live comfortably and safely. Ellie Hollander, CEO of Meals on Wheels America, expressed gratitude for The Home Depot Foundation's support, which has helped thousands of seniors age in place safely.

3. Housing Access for Homeless Veterans: The Foundation collaborates with nonprofits to provide solutions for veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Programs include comprehensive support services such as counseling, job training, financial literacy, and healthcare access, which address both immediate and long-term needs. The "master lease" pilot program initiated by U.S.VETS is a notable example, allowing veterans facing housing insecurity to secure homes without the traditional burdens of rental agreements determined by credit history.

This historic investment aligns with The Home Depot Foundation's annual "Celebration of Service" campaign, which honors veterans with numerous community service projects across the country, from Patriot Day to Veterans Day. The foundation has already invested over $600 million in veteran causes and improved more than 65,000 homes and veteran facilities.

As many Home Depot employees are veterans themselves or military spouses, supporting veterans forms an intrinsic part of The Home Depot's culture. Those interested in learning more about The Home Depot Foundation's initiatives can visit HomeDepotFoundation.org.
