Allergy Advocates NY Pushes for Essential Allergy Safety Legislation
In New York, a pressing call to action is being made by Allergy Advocates NY alongside Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal. Together, they are rallying support for legislation aimed at protecting over 2 million residents, including approximately 200,000 children, who deal with life-threatening allergies daily. A press conference scheduled for May 18th at 11:00 AM in Albany will serve as a platform to emphasize the urgent need for improved safety measures in food labeling, allergy prevention strategies, and epinephrine accessibility in childcare settings.
Understanding the Dangers of Allergies
Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur without warning. Alarmingly, many individuals may not even be aware that they have allergies. As such, the need for accurate information and proactive measures is crucial to safeguarding vulnerable populations. For those affected, the quick administration of epinephrine can be the difference between life and death.
Proposed Legislative Changes
The following legislative initiatives have been proposed to enhance safety for those with food allergies:
1. Menu Labeling (A11072 / S10116)
This important bill aims to mandate the labeling of the top nine allergens on menus in food service establishments. Sponsored by Assembly Member Lunsford and Senator Fernandez, this legislation is intended to offer an added layer of security for individuals managing severe food allergies. Support from additional sponsors is encouraged to amplify this initiative’s effectiveness.
2. Allergy Prevention (A771 / S7915)
Research has demonstrated that the timely introduction of allergy-causing proteins, such as peanuts and eggs, to infants can significantly reduce the risk of developing allergies. This legislation requires health insurers to cover the costs of nutritional supplements aimed at allergy prevention during infants' first well-visit exam. Backed by Assembly Member Rosenthal and Senator Gounardes, this proposal promises to save families and the healthcare system considerable finances.
3. Epinephrine Training and Stocking in Childcare Centers (A9245 / S8587)
As part of a critical amendment to Elijah’s Law, this measure will require all daycare centers to stock appropriate epinephrine devices and ensure staff are adequately trained in their use. With support from Assembly Member Rosenthal and Senator Gounardes, the training would be provided at no cost, thus enhancing safety measures in childcare environments across the state.
